Ahh I see. A 2.5 drive has the same connector as a 3.5 one? With IDE drives the connector was smaller and combined the power pins. SATA only changes in form factor for optical drives. Wasn't sure about SCSI though as I've never personally seen or used one in that form factor. That and the newer...
I personally would not approve of putting a 10k drive inside a compact mac. At least I wouldn't put one in my own mac.
They get along fine with larger machines, but 10k drives generate more heat and draw more power then normal drives. Put it in a external enclosure if you can. :p
Maybe the...
I've read somewhere that it's easier to maintain the creme method if you cover the covered areas with plastic wrap which keeps it from drying out. I personally will prefer the submerge in liquid method. It will likely coast a bit more in material (like finding and buying a clear plastic tub...
If the IDE to USB board gone bad, one solution may be to bypass it to see if it's a problem with the drive. The USB to IDE board is actually housed in the cable you connect to the back of the unit.

Not sure about the newer models, but the original was...
There's a chance whoever replaced that drive wasn't aware it was a 800k drive. Outwardly, it's hard to tell the difference as they may look similar physically. :p
I'm pretty sure it was a Performa though.
It was definitely not a G3. It looked more like the 5xx series. If not the 575, something older in that line perhaps. It could have been a 580 if those were around in the USA. They look very similar to the older 5xx series. It would make sense if it was...
Unfortunately my drive doesn't use voice coil for the head. As far as I can tell the platters look clean on my drive. I opened it up briefly this morning and did not see any scratches/marks. Sorta odd how this drive just up and quit. The guy who gave it to me said it worked before he pulled it...
If you are using a PC make sure it's a 1.44mb sized image you write to the disk. 800/400k images won't work from a PC because of the special format those size disks use. As long as you stick to the 1.44mb images, you can write an image to a disk if you use something like HFVExplorer or Transmac...
Yeah. Some of the horizontal desktop machines are ok with me. But I definitely have a preference for the LCs for that category of desktops. Besides the all-in-one Macintoshes, The LC "pizza box" machines have sentimental value to me because the elementary school I went to used them in their...
Ahh so that's what's going on. I had assumed he had already booted into MacOS. I think he was at the Flashing Floppy icon. Now the instant eject makes sense.
Yeah try what technight has suggested. If the Mac was at the floppy icon asking for a boot disk, it decides pretty quick your floppy...
Wow that drive looks bad. Looks like you could almost take the platter out and use it as a vinyl for a DJ. :p
With scratches that bad, I'd be surprised if the head hadn't been ripped clean off by now. I think my drive may have had a head-crash too since my mac won't read it. (Diagnosing the...
I recently read about the 580 on wikipedia:
"Lastly, the Trinitron display of the 575 was replaced with a cheaper shadow mask screen, causing a slight change in the plastic case surrounding the CRT"
From that quote I'm led to believe you might have problems getting a Trinitron CRT to mount...
There isn't a real need to emulate an external SCSI drive. Just take a SCSI2SD and put it in an enclosure. I'm sure that's pretty much the same thing. :p
But I suppose you could chop off the jack off a old printer cable and create a simple adapter for it if you want the drive to hang off the...
Ouch. I've heard UPS can be pretty rough. But my Macintosh SE arrived to me in one piece. Maybe I just have one of the better UPS drivers in my town? :p
It all comes down to how well the seller packs it I would guess. :p
Eww. I don't like how that screen's adjusted. You should fix that ASAP. :p
For the compacts, I prefer how the factory had them set. A bit of a gap on the sides with a slightly bigger gap on the top/bottom. Looks like someone went out of their way to stretch out the screen. I'd imagine the...
Yep that's the exact model. Although this one is a bit peculier. It has a black face plate on the front with LED. (so there is no connector to attach the SE's LED cord to. :( ).
It looks like this particular drive was meant to be in a server rack of some kind perhaps. Odd that it found it's...
Ok. I've removed the drive and took a closer look at it. I've disconnected the circuit board and noticed something:
There is some "debris" near the center axle area that contacts a copper fin on the circuit board. Here's a photo of the underside of the circuit board:
And here's a photo of...
Ok once I get a replacement drive, what would I have to do to try and recover data of this drive? I've heard of the freezer trick and also manually moving the head if it gets stuck in the park position.
But my drive isn't really doing any "click of death" noises. It does some clicks on spin up...
