Quadra 605 adventures: repair, testing, and upgrades

I tried out the no-FPU 040 again today, to refresh my memory of the issue with it and it booted with a normal chime, but there was no video or apparent further boot processing, since the HD did not progress. After trying a couple of more reboots to make sure that was the only result, I swapped...

Quadra 605 adventures: repair, testing, and upgrades

Do you have a picture of this that you can post? Also, how are you washing the board? I had a no FPU 040 chip I tried and I don't believe it worked on mine - I don't recall the exact way it failed to work, but I can recheck that on mine and report back.

Repairing an Apple 45W Power Adapter M7332 (Yo-Yo charger)

Deutschland? https://www.amazon.de/-/en/PowerSmart-Power-Connector-Apple-Female/dp/B0CM8Z2BTH It appears to be for a listing that only allows for shipping within Germany... couldn't even get a price. ...or Belgium...

FWB Hard Disk Util, not Hard Disk Toolkit

Makes sense, since it would facilitate hard drive adoption by removing one of the obstacles "I have to run XXXX off a floppy anyway, so why buy a hard disk?". Excellent catch and a nice discovery!

    Macintosh 512k horizontal line issue

Not sure if there is any help there, but pp 49 - 50 in the dead Mac scrolls cover this condition... It looks like the explanations on page 49 cover fixes that you have already attempted (resoldering J1 and then recapping should have addressed C5). Page 50 covers other potential electrical issues...

What does $50 buy you these days? A Mac LC, if you know where to look!! :)

I can't argue much... I picked up an LC from eBay a couple months back for 66 bucks shipped and it literally was missing the HD, floppy, needed a re-cap and was missing the PSU, but it had all the cables, memory, VRAM and was pristine inside and out with a perfect case. I really didn't care if...

Safest technique for removing SOIC chips on SE/30 like UD8, UE8, UF8, etc.

Hot air also (nice tip about the single edge razor blades btw, I'll have to try that). Like the OP, I have some ChipQuik (generic though) as well and haven't used it yet either.

Macintosh SE works fine then completely dead an hour later.

Looks great! I've recapped one of those PSU's in an SE of mine, got another ready to test and and another in an SE/30 that will probably need to be re-capped. Looking at your working area there, I think you made a great choice taking the alternative path and getting yours running with the...

Finally found my white whale, a decent 5400/200

It does look really nice, and just the right shade of mature. Be careful with the back panel and especially with the side clips. I tried taking mine apart one time, and that was something I never tried again! Good luck with yours!

    Boxed MacTRAC

I don't have a lot of items that are NRFB, and also sealed in the plastic outer wrap, but when I get them, it is really difficult not to just leave them that way. This one may come out eventually, but for now, since the plastic is still in such excellent shape, as well as the box itself, I...

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

I'm glad that you found this, because my searching, absolutely failed to turn this up! So thanks for figuring it out and reporting back - I have this in my cart already. If for no other reason than I have to get some of my own, so I can decipher the messages imprinted on the tape... ( ...you...

Repaired a Quantum 40 S full height drive with a stuck parked head!

So you wrapped and sealed the bumper with this - It looks excellent, and since it works that's even better! Which brand of tape did you use (3M Temflex?, WarriorWrap? something else? Could you share a product number if you have it?

Is there a way to turn the monitor off, but leave the logic board active on my SE/30?

With all of the work that Bolle et al have done on the SE/30 recreation, grayscale, expansion cards, etc, there has to be something they have come across that would allow a safe circuit hack to be inserted at the hardware level, or maybe even a software bodge for this? Maybe a thought on the...

Levco MonsterMac with SCSI and lots of dirt

I've got the Marx brothers as well - I think I've seen the Dwarfs on earlier boards(?), but I also thought that I should mention that the 512 board that mine was attached to had a bad (leaky) axial cap, which I still need to make time to fix.

Mac LCIII upgrade with 475 board installation...floppy drive question

You folks are a real bad influence on me! I thought this was way too good an idea not to try out, so now I own an original LC that I have just successfully, recapped, but since it missed my flurry of retrobriting this summer, I may have to try out one of the indoor alternatives.

Levco MonsterMac with SCSI and lots of dirt

That's what I found with mine - no zany startup, and the MonsterMac just worked, providing the additional memory. I have a revision 'D' board with the same revision ROMS and I suspect that only early revisions of the board/ROMS had the fun startup and that it was cleansed from the later...

    scsi2sd-util not finding my device

I owe a thanks to @dochilli for bringing this back and having me take another look. ...and it turns out I couldn't just let it go, and I really tried for a couple days, but that and the combination of taking another look at my settings, uncovered a couple of issues. I had taken a backup before...
