Correct (PowerMac6,1). The only bad thing about the iMac G4s is that they have a pathetically small amount of L2 cache. 512K would have helped a _lot_. But I like the G4 pro speakers, it has lots of ports, it fits on my desk and it's really neat looking.
Maybe, but neither of my 15" iMac G4s are that way. On the other hand, the 15" LCD is probably quite a bit less heavy on the arm.
Why? I think it's a gorgeous machine. One of Apple's most simultaneously adventurous and functional designs.
That said, I don't see any reason why you couldn't have...
I think they were all called "upgrade kits" (at least, I've never seen a 7.1 box that wasn't), presumably because it was for already operational Macs and not because it required a previous version of the operating system (since it didn't, natch).
I have a feeling you're going to need to take the LCD off the bezel and work on the nuts attaching the display to the arm. This is not super difficult but it's not super easy. iFixit can probably give you a teardown. You should not need to disassemble the base, just the display.
You made me curious, so I got out my own boxed USA System 7.1 install package, and wtf! there it is. I never noticed before, mostly because I was only interested in the operating system.
Very nice! I had a user once who got 8.6 running on his 601+IIci, and then ran Classilla on that. With the full 128MB of RAM he described it as "poky, but useable."
Should serve you well. I have a 15" 1GHz iMac G4 myself (though I have 1.25GB of RAM in it, and next time I'm inside the base I'll replace the factory RAM and put it to a full 2GB).
I would be very leery of AIX 4.3 on that machine. Does it boot from that CD? If it does, then it *might* work (but the APARs from IBM I tried to install on my own ANS back in the day caused NVRAM to be corrupted). If it gives you an error, I wouldn't go any further.
The three-pair plug is for...
The base installer is actually text, but I think there is an X11 (NB: X11R5) portion. Remember, if you turn on CDE, this version has numerous remotely exploitable vulnerabilities. Run it only on a trusted network or behind a solid firewall.
But of course the same question applies for any CPU upgrade. I sometimes ask myself why I bother having to mess around with settings on the G4 in my 7300, but I like my 7300, and it has nostalgia value (and I want to keep the MDD dedicated to Classilla work primarily).
The only 1980s computer magazine that mattered was COMPUTE! and its spinoffs. I devoured COMPUTE!'s Gazette, and even wrote some articles for them in the twilight General Media years after ABC/Capitol Cities sold them off.
Well, okay, I also liked Creative Computing a lot.
