Restoring a Macintosh IIx and upgrading to 128 MB of RAM

Oh, btw, I have the same exact battery mod. I was able to make mine fit by bending the leads sideways a bit. Maybe my holders were a bit narrower. They sit nice and tight against the board.

Restoring a Macintosh IIx and upgrading to 128 MB of RAM

Great job and thanks for providing a thoroughly enjoyable write-up! I’m sure this will help others who are faced with similar issues. Very well done. Imho the original Mac II line are gorgeous machines and definitely worth the restore effort. It’s among my top three in terms of...

announcing beigeATX for 10 pin PSU Macs

Hmm I thought the BroadATX is specifically for Mac II/x/fx

    Old screen's worn out ?

If the cutoff adjustment had no effect, I would suspect some component on the analog board, like cutoff pot, or maybe some resistor etc. Edit: I didn’t realize the pot has been mentioned multiple times here. Reading is hard.

    SE and noise on screen

I had similar issues on one of my builds and it was due to the neck board solder joints coming loose (the part that is attached to the neck). I would inspect/reflow those as well as the connector on the analog board.

Yeah I’m also interested in the BroadATX. What’s the ETA on that?

    SCSI CD-ROM Drive Repair

Yep, I exclusively use caddy drives (for nostalgia purposes LOL). The caddy drives shouldn't have lens issues because they have a brush inside that actually cleans the lens every time you insert a caddy. Pretty smart design.

    SCSI CD-ROM Drive Repair

Most of the early Sony drives are very solidly built but they almost universally fail due to leaky electrolytic caps. I replaced caps on a few failed drives and every time it fixed all the issues. I attached some photos for you. The last 2 pictures are of a recapped board (it’s the 300 board...

Speeding up a Color Classic - Without mystic or Takky

Hmm i just checked and 575s are indeed pretty crazy on eBay. Although, I thought I saw some full mystic builds on Buyee recently for pretty cheap, maybe $300 ish range? Another option might be to find a TransWarp 4300 card. I don’t know what kind of magic they use, but the TransWarp cards...

So I tried retrobrighting an ABD Mouse...

I will post my method as soon as I get a chance to do the write-up. In terms of the original color, the “platinum” gear like the mouse you have should appear light grey in normal daylight (e.g., light through your windows).

So I tried retrobrighting an ABD Mouse...

I’ve had similar issues in the past when using the “standard” peroxide/UV combination, resulting in weird bright spots and streaks, brittle plastic, and in some cases, severe over-bleaching (plastic actually ending up much lighter color than the original). Unfortunately, in my experience, there...

    Help flashing Radeon 7000

I too ended up just replacing the chip (actually twice because I messed up the first flash). I just used my Mac to flash it using the flash utility. I used this rom. https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/winbond-electronics/W25X20CLSNIG/3008613

Help with SE/30 and Micron Xceed SE/306-48

What did you do to make it show up on the external monitor? It wasn’t working at all before, right? Did you try it with an Apple CRT (if you have one handy)?

I am finally a Macintosh II owner again

Those look right to me. The data sheet says 30mm spacing, which should be about right. I didn't buy mine, I just stole them off some donor boards. In my case, the holes were slightly too close to make the two holders sit cleanly side by side, so I had to bend the leads slightly sideways to...

I am finally a Macintosh II owner again

You can compare the board revisions here: Rev A, Rev B. The MMU is the big black chip right above the CPU. The PMMU would be gold and would be labeled MC68851. Yours looks to be the original configuration which came with 2MB, upgradable to 8MB. The 68851 was later offered as an upgrade to...

I am finally a Macintosh II owner again

Congrats!! I too am especially fond of the OG Macintosh II and have a similar history with it. Looks like you have the Rev A board which is the better of the two since it has no surface mount caps. I never replaced any caps and most people agree that it's not needed. The batteries are...

Things to Do With Your Networked Vintage Mac

Oh, had no idea. This is so cool. I will be setting this up tonight to do some browsing. Just like the old times except it won't take me several hours for a 100MB download, LOL. Thanks!!

Things to Do With Your Networked Vintage Mac

Ha, what blast from the past!!! Didn’t know if anybody here remembers HOTLINE. It was so much fun. There were even some private servers for people with similar interests that formed great little communities. And pretty much Mac exclusive.

    Macintosh SE/30 with a VDR-2a video card!

Congrats! AFAIK, those cards very common in Japan. I have a couple of them myself and they are very solid. They will also sit quite comfortably on top of an accelerator like the Diimo. Add one of those and a CD ROM drive like the AppleCD and it’s the ultimate 68K setup. If you don’t mind...
