Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

That's really cool! Sorry if I was patronising, I really have no idea what involvement people have had with other architectures. All the early RISC architectures are interesting from my view (even ARM26). I don't own a Sun SPARC anything, but I do own a PA-RISC 715 (or 725/735) and an SGI Indy...

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

Lol! Thanks for that! @Melkhior is very much into Suns & for kicks (mostly self-inflicted :ROFLMAO: ) I'm exploring SS5 emulation on QEMU running at the same speed as the IPX I had a Manchester Uni. I guess you've scanned earlier comments so you know we've been talking about the Sun MMU...

    x86 card revival thread

@Melkhior : What we need is a Sparc FPGA compatibility card for PDS & NuBus 😀 ! (Though is it even possible to support a non-standard frame buffer size?)

Best Hard Disk Environment for Apple IIe?

Booti gets my vote for being so dinky and made from components that could have been from the Apple ][ era (USB excepted). Though having said that, an SD card version of BOOTi wouldn't even need a USB controller, just an SPI interface! Woztastic!

Aquafox - new web browser for G4 running OS X Tiger

Now I feel bad for never having bought a copy of Tiger. I think I stuck with 10.3.9 on my iMac G5 and my PBG4 12" came with Tiger install discs. I the last one I bought was Leopard (and the Snow Leopard upgrade). OTOH I only currently have 160MB on the G3, and the SATA project is ongoing!

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

From a discussion elsewhere on the 68kmla, I thought it was possible to use the FC pins to create a separate instruction/data address spaces. Well, when you’ve fixed these issues, you’ll be able to add more ram. There’s good evidence now to Show that AI coding wastes more time checking and...

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

Interesting. True, I was thinking of how separate instruction/data contexts would have provided a sort-of 32MB address range (like the pdp-11). I knew it wasn't actually 31-bits, 1GB in the early 80s would have been even greater overkill. The Sun 3/60s we had access to at UEA, I think were...

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

I just wanted to read up on that again. http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/sun/sun2/800-1185-01_2-120_CPU_Engr_Sep84.pdf In modern terms, a Context is like the ASID bits on a MIPS R3000: it allows multiple page tables to be present on the system and to switch between them by changing the context...

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

OK - compromise: on a 68000, you need contiguous memory at the CPU level :) ! Interesting. I suppose VISA means the "V8" memory controller chip, which contains a subset of the HMMU? I searched for the ROM listing, haven't found it yet. Yes, that's what I'm talking about. I think that it's...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Hi folks, So, I have tried to use the dosdude1 patcher and of course, it hangs because it has an AM28F010, which, as per this comment, needs 12V to program it. Gosh. I can't believe it's even possible to buy a flash chip that needs 12V any more and I had completely forgotten that the original...

Aquafox - new web browser for G4 running OS X Tiger

That’s the important thing! Just wondering, what would stop it working on Panther? Is the OS that different?

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

I think I’ve figured out how an MMU can map discontiguous RAM at eg 64MB offsets and then run 24-bit mode System 6. It’s not too trivial, but this is how I’d do it. You set up 16MB worth of page tables (you only need 16MB/32kB=512 entries). To create the page table entries that map the rest of...

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

Pretty sure that the V8 memory controller on the LC and LCII make sure non-contiguous 4MB (or 2MB on the LC) and SIMM DRAM appear contiguous, because the LC has a 68020. It can’t use an MMU to do that. Also pretty sure the LCII ROM is almost exactly the same as the LC ROM and therefore doesn’t...

Can a Macintosh use non-contiguous RAM?

Throwing my weight of naivety and ignorance into the mix of this. My understanding is that for some Macs, particularly in the ≥68030 eras, but also going up to the PPC era (e.g. PowerBook 1400), non-contiguous RAM was handled both by custom chips and the MMU. But let's start with the Mac Plus...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Unexpected, since it has FireWire! I would expect so. Dazzle has to get the video data rate to somewhat below 12Mbits/s as it's a USB 1.1 device: pretty heavy compression. And I have the original installation CD! It's Mac OS 8.6 compatible! Wooh! Undoubtably! I do have a Canon MV500i DV...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Didn't Apple release the last version for free too? I was brought up on Sinclair ZX Basic, syntax-perfect, Single-Keyword-Entry editing in the early 1980s and after that, nothing else has come close ;) ! And indeed I've already bought one, for just £11 (+P&P). The adventure begins! I realise...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

So many choices! I might go for a USB MidiSport 2x2 to begin with, alongside a micro arduino to experiment with as that seems a fairly cheap route. I’m pretty sure I used to use Apple’s USBprobe with my tangerine iBook/300, which I think I had because I imagined I’d be writing at least one...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Pending the arrival of the SATA cables I installed Steinberg Cubasis VST 2.0 for Mac on the B&W 350. It's a Classic application I used with my tangerine iBook/300 or maybe my iceBook/600. At the time I had a Roland SC-D70 Sound Canvas. Essentially it's a bit like two MT-32s stuck together, with...

It looks very similar to my Mad B&W G3/350. Mine was also a server in its former life (with SCSI). It turns out you can put a HD as master on the same IDE channel as the CD ROM while making the CD slave, then boot up the cd to install an OS. But maybe you have the newer rev with the good IDE...
