you may need a third party hard drive utility to make it work. The apple utility may not work. My powerbook 540c didnt like the card I got until I used Hard Disk toolkit. As they are not "apple branded" drives.
Also the speaker itself on classic and classic II's have been proven to go bad. they are kind of a pain as you have to drill the rivets out to replace.
There are adjustments inside the back cover on the analog board. Pretty easy fix, use a non metallic tool to turn them and turn a little at a time to get everything back to normal.
kernel panic? The airport card could be the issue. I have some 1.42's that freeze and airport is the issue. Try booting from DVD/CD and disable airport, reboot into safe and shut it off and use ethernet if needed. Removing the airport software all together does it also.

Ya my color classic just now with cd player can control the external CD play, volume settings and such but the internal speaker does not output. I dont remember having external speakers before but I am not sure.
