Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
The top shell went in a tank of some (by then, weak) Peroxid/Water with UVA light, and then an afternoon in strong sun.
It's not quite perfect yet, but it's no longer brown.
The main shell went into the same peroxide mix but I think by the time that went in the peroxide was pretty much spent...
I've done a recap of both the analogue and logic board in a Macintosh Classic. Triple checked all the capacitor values and orientations and they're fine.
First time switching it on I heard the speaker crackle into life, but there was no chime. The speaker after a few seconds tried to make...
The IIci has arrived!
The motherboard is pristine other than some dirt and, of course, the caps needs replacing but it looks like it hasn't done much corrosion.
The case though is pretty much BROWN and matches my floor. It also smells horrible, like wet plaster. Smoker's computer?
Either way...
More than happy to take a cache card! Name a price and I'll see. Though I want to make sure I can get it working before spending anymore money. Still waiting for the machine to arrive from eBay.
The only thing I really need are the front buttons and the drive cage. Outside of that I should have everything I need! If I can't find what I need in the UK I might give you a shout. :)
I scored a IIci for super cheap (GBP£30). No floppy drive, no hard disk, no drive cage, no reset/interrupt buttons and no PSU, but the motherboard looks super clean and just needs a recapping.
Since I'm also in the process of restoring two Macintosh Classics, one of them beyond repair (battery...
I've removed the problem caps from the analogue board and cleaned the areas around them with alcohol. Now It's just a case of ordering some caps, and sadly the cap values are different for the 220v version of the board so I have to go order them myself rather than using a pre-made kit or list...
My dad to the rescue! He has some three core wire and three electrical tester screwdrivers I can borrow, so I'll be getting those this afternoon.
As an aside, I don't have a keyboard or mouse for this classic, so I went on eBay and as a complete stroke of luck, the same shop I bought my two...
I'll see if I can find something to discharge the CRT so I can get to work on the high voltage board. I need an anti-static band or wire to connect a screwdriver to the ground point, and I need a non-magnetic screwdriver. I have neither of those right now! I start my 2 weeks holiday (first time...
You'll laugh, but the probes on my dirt cheap multimeter are too big to fit in the pin holes on the floppy connector, so I couldn't get a reading! haha. :D
However, some observed behaviour:
The speaker clicking slowly picks up speed, meaning whatever is not providing the correct voltage is...
Yeah I really need to give the rest of the computer a dust and a swab with IPA. The motherboard has came up fab though. Now if I could only get the rest of the computer to look like this then I'll be golden.
Thank you very much! I'll give that a read now. I don't have any capacitor gunk on my board and they don't look like they're bulging (but looks can be deceiving). Was chatting with someone else and it looks like the board isn't getting enough power, hence the clicking since it's constantly...
The likes of Mouser and Digi-Key in the UK want £17,00 postage for a hand-full of caps (for orders under £30-something), so I may as well buy them pre-made from Console5 if all the values are the same.
