Where to buy capacitors etc in Australia?

This is timely! I'm just looking for about 15 types of caps for two 68k Powerbooks with faulty displays. Jaycar has only a few of the values I need. Futurlec the same. Nobody sells 2.2uf x 35v SMDs. WES Components in Sydney has everything electro (though tiny range of Kemet-type tantalum SMDs)...

Apple Power Supplies - why watts?

Thanks Coius, that confirms my understanding. What I don't understand is why Apple's support document specifies its proprietary PSUs by watts instead of volts/amps. You could connect something with the nominated "watts" rating that would destroy your machine in a puff of smoke if the voltage...

Apple Power Supplies - why watts?

In a current Conquests thread on a PB165 there has been discussion of correct ratings for power supplies that should be connected to various PB models. The official Apple support document seems to suggests you should not connect a PSU that exceeds the recommended level of "watts". I don't get...

    PB 145 screen recap question

As far as I can see, the layout and cap specs are the same for the screen of the PB160 I have just disassembled. NB there are also a couple of electros on the inverter board that sits in the main case near the left hinge. I will replace those as well, as inverter caps are usually more suspect...

    pb 165

Sorry, forgot to mention that the cheapie I use has a range adjustable 6-24volts. I always check voltage for individual machines before attaching, EVERY TIME. Hope nobody rushed out and fried irreplaceable machines between these posts :I Rick

    PB190cs odd screen

Just got it taken apart and pleased to see only a few electrolytics to replace (though none obviously blown or leaky). Some evidence that the display had been squeezed (sat upon?) at some point in its history and had a slight curve in it - that could suggest problem with ribbon cable connectors...

Awesome -- fast -- bad cap removal tool.

Uniserver may have some martial-arts energy directing skills up his sleeve, but I think I will stick to the cut-off method that I have used on a small number of boards so far without pad loss. When you snip off the can and pry the base off the remains of the soldered pins, you can apply the...

    PB190cs odd screen

The PB190cs that I'm now working on has a strange screen symptom. It powers up, and the screen stays mainly a murky dark green except for the top menu bar and the bottom tab area, which are both normal including showing cursor when it is there. If I click on a drop-down menu in the visible part...

    pb 165

For PBs/iBs where I don't have a standard power brick, I use a generic 2amp 20volt brick with a range of exchangeable plugs on the end of it - different plugs for Clamshsells, PBG4, PB190, PB160... The one I have was very cheap off eBay, and is electrically noisy, but it works fine to power up...

    Powerbook swag in Canberra

Well the seller was friendly but not chatty. I'd guess a technician in some capacity - this town is full of academic, science and military. The Wallstreet contained about 10,000 10 year-old emails on a previous owner's university teaching and students - all deleted now. Not a wheeler-dealer...

    Powerbook swag in Canberra

I thought I had finished my accumulation phase, but... Tipped off by Byrd, I bid for a lot of Powerbooks on ebay, located in Canberra, Australia. Since freight is often a prohibitive cost for me, I jumped at this. Nobody else jumped, so I got the lot for $20 and picked it up myself. 1 A G3...

Any tips on 800k Floppy head?

This symptom is very common, but not easy to diagnose or fix. There are several possible reasons why track 0 of the disk is not being read correctly. 1. The diskette can be faulty. Does it work in another drive? 2. There may be an alignment difference between the drive that wrote the disk, and...

USB Wireless mouse on G4, Tiger

As a wrap to this - I found that the problem was not to do with any Logitech driver. For other reasons, I did a complete clean re-install of Tiger. The Logitech "USB receiver" was immediately discovered and the mouse works perfectly. Conclusion: the Tiger USB device enumeration database must...

Is MintPPC still best option for G4 Powerbook?

BTW the WICD alternative network manager is definitely a better interface - however it does not overcome this specific issue of WEP code rejection.

Is MintPPC still best option for G4 Powerbook?

Yes, I have tried the "0x" prefix, also the "$" and "&H" prefixes. They don't work. I think the problem is Debian/Mint being a bit clever in the wrong way. The one entry box is used for 40bit security passwords in either Hex or ASCII formats. It counts the numbers of characters entered...

Is MintPPC still best option for G4 Powerbook?

There's a snag with MintPPC that may be common to many or all PPC Linux distros - the wireless network utility can not negotiate WEP security via Airport. Obviously, a Powerbook is not much use without wireless network access. I don't want to have to use a WiFi dongle if I can avoid it. I...

Is MintPPC still best option for G4 Powerbook?

I'm giving MintPPC a try on my G4 TiBook, but I notice there has been no release since November 2011. Is there a better alternative? Rick

USB Wireless mouse on G4, Tiger

Hmm - the USB dongle seems not to be detected with standard Tiger - I'll look for an older Logitech driver as you suggest. Rick

USB Wireless mouse on G4, Tiger

I have a Logitech V220 wireless mouse "for laptops", which I'd like to use with my Titanium Powerbook (I don't like trackpads). The only Mac driver package on the Logitech site requires OSX 10.5 Leopard. Anyone know of any driver or hack that might work? Rick

    Mac Plus floppy ejects immediately

The first thing you need, if you don't already have it, is a good digital multi-meter with continuity, resistance and voltage ranges. Herz and capacitance ranges can also be handy. Without that, you have no way of checking components. Read up some threads on de-soldering. There are many tricks...
