I have the same camera, You can use CHDK on it (There is a beta). PC World also rated this camera the best point and shoot. Love it!

Can a program disable that much? That must be a well designed program! I would say trying to put it into another desktop Mac as a second drive and then formatting from that other Mac could work.

Aren't there recording programs that can take audio from separate programs that are currently playing audio? I think Audio Highjack is what I am thinking of, try installing a demo and maybe it could tell you what program is playing the music.

Try FreePPP, I tried to use it for other things that I don't think are fully possible with the software I was using, though it seemed like a very good app to do it. The previous owner was using it before he gave that PowerBook to me.

I am not too experienced with Linux. My brother is terrible with computers, Xubuntu is easy enough for him. It doesn't need to be fast for what he is doing.
