The refracting prism that points the laser at the disc gets dust on it, and prevents the automatic laser focus cycle from being successful. The symptom is the drive will accept the disc, spin, make some tiny clicking noises (the focus cycle) and then spit the disc out. Take it apart, and clean...

I used to use a free Windows utility called "Winimage". Worked fine for reading and writing 1440 KB Mac floppies.

Don't assume the drives have sticktion just because they're not spinning. They don't start until the controller tells them to, and you're not far along enough yet in the boot process for that to have happened. Of course, they could still be stuck. But I doubt it. BTW the 8514/A outputs 256...

Don't play with the adjustment pots until you clean the optics. I used 99% isopropyl and a lint-free swab. The lens itself is probably relatively clean, but is easiest to get to. If you take the cover off, you'll basically be staring right at it. Clean it, and if the problem persists, carefully...

5.0 was the first OS X release. I waited quite a while for it to become available. The CD definitely has documentation, user code, and assorted goodies. It's just the older releases I'm not sure about being on there.

I bought MCL 5.0 some years ago and I am reasonably certain the disc doesn't have any older releases on it.

Is there any reason you can't just double-click the shell script? If the executable bits are set, it automatically becomes a "unix executable" in the Finder. Some extensions (.sh, .pl, maybe others) defeat this behavior and cause the file to open in TextEdit.app regardless of executable bits...

you'll have to use single quotes around the *telnet* to keep the shell from interpreting the stars. double quotes won't cut it. find / -name '*telnet*' -print or find / -name \*telnet\* -print

Herb's a talker, but otherwise a fine upstanding fellow. I bought some Sun-2 parts from him a year ago. No complaints on my part, except he sold the one part I was most interested in before I could tell him, "I'll take it!" Hardly his fault though.
