Have you looked at an mSATA to IDE (2.5") bridge box setup?
I got both of my Pismo's using them now along with my G4 mac mini (Filemaker Pro Server) jamming right now. Boot times are very fast and 128GB (~121GB formatted?) seems to work well.
Toshiba 128GB mSATA and the newer JM20330 chipset...
This is why I am leaning towards harvesting the cache from a 533MHz G4 Powermac board along with the CPU. The thermals are also inline with the other research I have done. And the voltages are just fine.
I thought there was something in the firmware or such that would detect cache misses/errors...
Regarding cache speeds, is there something in either the Pismo board or the Pismo firmware that would clock down the cache on a 400MHz board vs a 500Mhz?
It was my understanding that by setting the jumpers/resistors to 500MHz would increase the clock multiplier for the cache as well as for the...
I just got my board back from a fleabay service provider who reballed/reflowed a freescale G4 500MHz cpu onto my spare 400MHz Pismo board.
Delicious... and cache is working fine. He did a solid job and the price was SUPER reasonable. ($55 + S&H US)
Onto my spare 500MHz board and to see if...
Please post an update when you get it running. I've not used 7 since 8.1 came out. Actually, I only use OS9 for games and a few older FilemakerPro 5 databases I recently discovered on some zips.
I am going to wait and see how the existing 400MHz G3 -> 500MHz G4 upgrade goes and then test it out. Then onto the other Pismo board that has the 500MHz G3 with the faster cache. If there is no difference, then I won't bother with the chips.
I am on the road to 550MHz G4 for at least one...
So how do I go about re-soldering the cache chips back onto the Pismo board after I clean it up? You don't "reball" them as such, but, do you "add" solder/flux to the existing cache chips and then heat them up?
Not the fastest platform for doing HUGE csv imports into a table, but, I got it working after digging out my old copy of FMP 8.5 and 5.0 [i do NOT recommend running FMP 8 or 9 on a G3 under 400MHz and less than 512MB of RAM]
One thing that was weird, when I loaded FMP 8.5 onto my XP VM, I was...
Minor update.
My contact for the reball work received the G3-400Mhz board and Freescale G4 cpu. He is a bit back logged, but, I plan to start extracting the G4-7410LE 533MHz cpu from my harvested graphite board here shortly.
I have all the tools to do the extraction and now just need to block...
Well, I sent my G3 400MHz Pismo board off to be reballed. I got the 7410 from the guys in China a week or so ago. I have a 2nd CPU from them that I ordered at the same time.
Reballing service said it would take about 4-6 weeks turn around time.
If the 500MHz on the 400MHz board works well...
FYI, HP had a "rack to tower" kit they made for their Itanium (YUCK!) servers into workstations.
It would make a server into a ZX6000 "tower" case but was loud as sin.
I saw a similar home-brew setup for a Sun v445 that someone cooked up and it was .... silly. But if you wanted a T series...
Well, I got a copy of Panther server off ebay (new, unused) and I have a 1.4GHz G4 mac mini laying around that I will finish switching to SSD (mSATA w/ J20332 adapter).
As I understand the process, I need to put the mini into firewire target mode, boot my G3 Pismo up with Disc 1, install...
Dead battery.... your pram and main battery are toast.
Removing the Pram altogether will probably all you need. Then you MIGHT be able to get a (small/weak) charge on the main battery.
We had 2 of them and 4 Xraid arrays at work years ago. Dual 1.25ghz an 2gb each and the storage had 4 drives in each "half".
Ran Panther server and then Leopard finally before they were decommissioned and replaced with a pair of Dell servers running Centos and a small SSD San array.
They show...
Can one still get a PDS to Nubus adapter to install a fast etherenet adapter in it? I've come across a 6100/60 that might make a nifty "WGS" storage unit with a pair of CF2SCSI adapters. (one in each bay)
You can "harvest" G4 processors from the G4 533MHz cpu boards from the Power Macs. There are quite a few of these on FleaBay (ebay) for like $10.
The problem is that they will need to be reballed prior to putting them onto to G3 ZIF boards. I believe the ZIF boards had an actual BGA installed...
I got word back from my FleaBay contact who said he would be interested in testing this out with a spare Pismo board but only if we tried it with a NEW 7410 vs messing with reballing a used CPU for now.
He didn't want to touch this unless he had access to a Powerbook to test this with, and he...
I spent a couple hours in between wrapping presents and going to see Rogue One today.
But my donor-now-secondary Pismo G3 had its DVD drive quit on me. USPS brought in the NOS compaq LG drive (8080n) just as I was fighting with my original.
I swapped controller boards, panels, and drive...
