Getting my Portable going again - hard disk options?

Ok, here we go: there are two basic priniples on how You can make Your own adapter. The first one is to use the original cable and connecting it to antoher one by drilling together / soldering and the second one consists of using completly new parts (which I recommend). Basics: Connection...

Getting my Portable going again - hard disk options?

I will post some graphics and photos I made about that adapter for my own page later on - in fact it's quite easy to make one of these on your own. Regarding termination within the Portable there is a simply answer: as long as the Portable only has one (!!!) SCSI port the termination of the...

    Maxing out the 9500

Well, SATA doesn't justify the costs for itself in an old world system, besides this I think that older hard- and software doesn't take that much advantage of a SATA system as promised by Sonnet and others. J

    Maxing out the 9500

Hmm... I´m upgrading my 9600 right now, too. To me it doesn´t make much sense to use SATA so I took two Sonnet 133 ATA cards, one serving the CD ROM and three disks (80 GB each) and the other one 4 disks (also 80 GB each) to the bottom of the 9600 case by using two double carriers from a G4...

    OpenStep 4.x Disk Images

For some time Apple provided free OpenStep and NeXTstep disks in return for a NeXT system serial number but this chance to obtain original installation media is long gone, too. So eBay and alike might be the only possibility to get hands on these, maybe some NeXT owner can help You at...

    ANS AIX setup

This is one of my next projects after setting up the ANS: networking my Apple IIe. I will have to find the necessary hard- and software for it first. Would be a shame to let a machine in mint condition just do some dust fetching... Just bought eight regular EDOs with 64 MB each from OWC and I...

Auction or Homage to the Portable?

Thanks, Bunsen! Just some Photoshopping... I'm using this one in several styles for other boards, too. One holds a NeXTcube, another the BMW logo (I'm a 1150 GS fanatic ;-) ) and a third one a Cobalt Qube. I like Scrat but he already is in competition with Wall-E: imgagine Wall-E with the body...

Auction or Homage to the Portable?

450 bucks... insane. He doesn't mention the state of the batteries... I got mine in even better condition and with lots more of add-ons for much (!!) less just some weeks ago. Simply insane. J

    ANS AIX setup

Today I got my RAM upgrade from OWC (thanks for this hint about Other World Computing, indeed very fast delivery via US priority mail) and now my ANS runs on 512 MB RAM - took me some time to eliminate the "missing" former RAM modules from the database but now this box really runs much faster. I...

    need to bypass foolproof

A little annotation: You are absolutely correct about this but I always wonder what people give away without any interest in their own data. I'm wiping every media I get but for example I can not wipe my tapes as the drive roller head is lost - the tapes still carry backups from some science...

Time to play: GUESS THAT SIMM!

Hmm... reminds me a bit of a Twentieth Anniversary Mac Cache. At least it looks a bit like the Sonnet Crescendo upgrade which already carries a cache. The Apple Network Server's cache looks similar, too but regarding the picture I would say this one is a bit smaller. J

Presto Plus in My Color Classic

Within OS X its getting difficult as long as You need a classic system as a minimum. To be honest: I never managed to get a bootable installation CD from OS X because You need to install a "system for all Macs" on a disk image - and a G5 or Intel Mac simply refuses to start this operation...

Got an old Newton Message Pad 110

I think a Xircom will be the solution here. Its just a small device that offers two serial ports and is hooked up to the USB port of Your G3. With this one You not only can use the Newton within OS 9 with all the fancy stuff from that time for the Newton but also within OS X conecting Your 110...

    ANS AIX setup

Every once in a while I´m re-reading this thread as it contains some very useful information - but I always stumble over "Austin, TX" in caryn´s name. :) Did You know that "Shiner" (code name for the ANS) was or is a beer that is made in Austin TX? As the legend tells some of the ANS...

Information needed: external Super Baby HD drive

Indeed it´s a very nice device for my old Macs. It´s funny to see how a TechStep is able to test the drive inside :) I will open it up somewhat later for providing photographs in high resolution - but the ADB hint is a good advice, will try that one with a appropiate cable. J

Advice needed: Apple Tape Backup 40SC / "liquid head&qu

Alright, here´s another one. Two years ago I got myself one of these very rare Apple Tape Backup 40SC drives. Took it home, powered it up, inserted a tape - complete breakdown! The plastic / rubber transport head / roll of that drive has got liquid within milliseconds ruining the tape. After...

Information needed: external Super Baby HD drive

Some months ago I "found" an external hard disk from an ex-Amiga user which is very unusual as I´ve never seen such a device before. Googleing for that box didn´t show any usefull information so I´m hoping someone might know a bit about that one: SuperBaby HD It utilizes a standard SCSI port...

    ANS AIX setup

By the way: A little list of hard disks that I was able to format and use: IBM Ultrastar DDYS-T36950 36,7 GB * Seagate Cheetah ST318203LW 18,8 GB * Seagate ST32272W 2 GB It destroyed (!) completly my 146 GB Seagate Cheetah ST3146807LW - this disk is recognized with several utilities on my...
