Hi,
I thought I'd post this here as it isn't really machine specific (if there's a better place for it, mods, fell free to move it).
Well I've had three line filter caps (EMI suppressors) fail in spectacular fashion (including that lovely lingering smell) in the last few weeks. These were all...
It's a bit hard to see what's happening on the screen in the video; I'm wondering if it is an analogue or digital issue. Any way you can check the logic board with another SE / SE30? I'm sure if you could you would have done that already. I would guess it's an analogue problem as the screen...
Very strange. Looks to be a purely passive device, more like an adapter. I have absolutely no idea how this is supposed to convert IDE to SCSI without any logic circuitry. I reckon this may be simply an adapter for SCSI devices using different connectors types.
I would approach with extreme...
I have yet to come across a suitably packaged SMT tantalum cap to replace the aluminium electrolytic SMT caps. That's why I always use through-hole bead type tantalums in these situations. They are easy to solder and easy to visually inspect. If you equalise the forces they don't put any excess...
Congrats, sound like you did well! Like having found a little bit of heaven :)
Mind you, that dual processor PC isn't really anything special. A lot of NT / Linux servers used dual Pentiums, and SCSI was/is common on x86 platform servers as well. I still have such a mobo lying around but...
Great find! Very jealous now :(
Are they ever going to invent a teleportation device??? Might have a chance of actually getting some Mac stuff then...any Mac stuff!
Yeah looks pretty cool alright, not if you're a poor LC though.
Have decided to try and get it going again; have scrubbed it down pretty well and it doesn't look too bad. Have to replace the caps alright and not sure if the pads are gone...also have to resolder some pins of the 68020 which have...
Another one bites the dust...or should I say has bitten the dust:
Picked up an LC with monitor for a tenner today and was told it wasn't working. When I got home and spotted all the rust on the backpanel I got suspicious...more rust than usual....this couldn't be, could it???
Looks like a...
Yeah just ordinary through-hole (or should that be thru-hole ;) ) tantalums, as I had a load of them lying around and didn't want to spend any money on my first recap..."sure it's not gonna work anyways :) ).
Besides I find them easier to solder in than the SMT ones.
Ah I see! I saw the 20Mb showing up in "about finder" but never checked to see what's using up what.
Now the machine is actually able to use all that lovely RAM.
Cheers!
Interesting! I wonder what is going on with my SE/30 as it shows 20Mb of RAM but also says it's not 32bit capable. I have 6.0.8 installed, added 20Mb of memory and didn't do anything else and hey presto it showed up no probs.
Also see this thread...
Ok, as promised here is an image of the "final revision" of my SE/30 board, the back of the board hasn't changed, see a previous post for that.
Also upgraded RAM to 20 Mb, but there is one thing I'm not sure about. It shows 20Mb but I thought the SE/30 had 24 bit addressing (giving a...
Yes, recap should do it alright. I had exactly the same problem (checkerboard screen) with my Classic II and the board showed absolutely no signs of leakage whatsoever. Actually the board looked brand new! Still though the caps must have dried out or something because recapping fixed it...
Nice work!
I'm after recapping my Classic II last week (bought it as "working" but turned out to have checkerboard screen) and now I read about this enhanced sound thing.
Could I have done anything different than replacing all caps with equivalent tantalums?
PS: Classic II works great now and...
