New to me iBook G4 12", musings and questions

Addendum to previous post: While the above was a way to get Classic Mode going, it is not a proper MacOS/System 9.2.X install. At the suggestion of somebody off of this board, I took my System 9.2.2 CD, with Classic Mode started, and clicked on the "Install MacOS 9.2.1" icon. The iBook then...

New to me iBook G4 12", musings and questions

I'm only putting this in for the sake of completeness, and just in case somebody else would like to do this in the future. I have now installed System 9.2.1(?) in Classic mode, and Classic mode seems to be working. Finding out the hard way, I inserted the 9.2.2 install CD into the optical...

New to me iBook G4 12", musings and questions

I was finally able to install OSX Tiger onto my iBook G4 from a DVD, after about a dozen tries. I first tried zapping the PRAM, and that also continued the hanging up during installation. I then removed the 1GB RAM SODIMM that I had installed, and it finally installed. I then updated to 10.4.11...

    Booting Ibook from USB

More reference data from my journey. the method of converting a .dmg file to a .iso is here< courtesy of the fine folks at Macintosh Repository: https://www.macintoshrepository.org/articles/172-how-to-convert-a-dmg-file-to-an-iso-disk-image- Seems that the problem with .dmg files is that...

    Booting Ibook from USB

As I have stated, with 10.4.0 booted up, the trackpad doesn't work, and neither does a wired Apple USB Mighty Mouse. So transferring the combo update to a USB stick, and bringing it over the iBook, while not a problem, will not allow me to install the Combo update, because I can't use the...

    Booting Ibook from USB

I am still having some issues with my iBook G4. I would really like to know if an A1133 iBook G4 can boot from a USB key. I have tried ordering a 10.4.2 IBook G4 Install disk from eBay (didn't boot), I tried to order a 10.4.3 Install disk from another eBay seller, never shipped. I have ordered a...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

I have Universal install disks on the way with OSX 10.4.3 and 9.2.2 on the way.

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

One more question, specifically regarding the Yoyo adapter. Does the Yoyo adapter have any built in protection? By protection, I mean short circuit, over-voltage/over-current/overpower, foldback power limiting, etc.? I ask because I have been going back and forth with somebody backchannel, and...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

It was sold as working. The seller said he was told that it worked, but he did not test it himself. Multimeters (one Fluke 87 III and one Uni-T 139C) both say no DC output, aside from a little bit of noise. The AC cable has continuity from the AC plug to the triple circle/mickey mouse head...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

The PRAM battery is disconnected already' it was the first thing I did when I got the machine. Flipped up the keyboard, saw the little two pin connector, and pulled it (it was rather stiff) out of the connector on the board. I also tried pressing the reset button on the back panel. No...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

One more question on the Pismo, then I will (try) to refrain. What is supposed to happen when you plug in a power adapter? Is there any power indicator on the power adapter or the laptop, even before hitting the power button on the laptop? Like the output end of the power adapter lighting up...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

Some more what may be considered newbie questions about the Pismo: 1. Can I use PC133 RAM instead of PC100? There seems to be more of the PC133 variety than of the PC100. 2. There is a media bay on the right side of the machine. On my machine, I have a DVD-ROM. I know you can put a battery in...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

I have gone onto the Low End Mac website, and I am using their guide to figure out which PCMCIA card to get. I don't think that the Airport card that is in there right now will allow me to go wireless with the current wireless setup that I have, so I will be using the PCMCIA/Cardbus solution...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

The Pismo was $16.50 Canadian. Its not a museum piece, but in better than expected overall. I think I should put some pictures on here just for reference purposes. Thanks for helping with some of the answers. I will continue to work on this unit until I figure out that it'll never work, or...

New (to me) Powerbook G3 Pismo, basic questions

I just got a Powerbook G3 (Pismo) from a local electronics recycling place. It overall looks pretty good, but it is not complete. I can't tell if it powers up or not, as I didn't get the charger/power adapter with it (I got one off of eBay, its on its way, but hasn't arrived yet). It is missing...

    Strange Mac SE 1/40

Looks like some sort of display card, either stand alone or as part of some accelerator board. The DB-15 port with the screw posts pretty much make it some sort of a display connector. The only real way to see is to take off the back cover/case, and actually look at the card, I guess.

Long Term Reliability of Quantum Drives

Running hard drives on their sides should be fine. Most hard drive vendors have only one restriction on position, and that is to not run them "nose down" (nose being the front of the drive, or the opposite end of where the drive connector is). Drive manufacturers will deny warranty coverage for...

    Toshiba portege 7140

Some of the old Windows laptops are really funky, and fun, machines. I have an old HP Omnibook 800CT as an on-going background project. Weird, odd ball built in mouse, and quite small, but very heavy for its size, sub-notebook. I guess it was a Libretto competitor.

New to me iBook G4 12", musings and questions

On my iBook G4 I also used InterwebPPC when it was running 10.5.8. Same experience as you had. It seems to be a replacement version of TenFour that was previously touted as a modern PPC web browser. The video problems with Youtube are probably all related to either the WiFi speed, the CPU...

New to me iBook G4 12", musings and questions

That is one way to go, but I will be installing onto the rotating hard drive first, and after I have that all working, I will then clone the installation to the SSD that is connected via the USB cable set. Then, I will attempt to boot from the SSD through the USB port. Only if that is successful...
