Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
If Apple's own System 8.6 "disable" setting doesn't work on the PDM macs it seems much less likely that there is a software-only solution to bypass the check. Oh well! Still a huge fan of them for some reason I can't really rationalize 😄
I tried on my Power Mac 6100 and unfortunately it does not seem to work. I get the "Startup Memory Tests" option in System 8.6 to disable the test in the Memory control panel, but turning the test Off does not have any effect - it still takes forever to do a cold boot. This is true both with and...
I ran a quick test yesterday which unfortunately did not work 😱
- Power Macintosh 6100
- System 7.6.1
- 256 MB RAM (this is why I want the bypass 😄)
- G3 accelerator
- HPV Card
I did not have so much time to mess around with the components or configuration, will see if it works with a more...
I got a Pinecil last year and it works great! Super happy with it, I feel no need to upgrade. Recapped maybe 30 logic boards with it by now. Tiny, heats up really fast, runs off of one my my macbook charger, really convenient since I live in an apartment and space is limited.
Just have to say that my dream scenario for pre-G4 PPC is exactly this: System 7.6.1 (with Speed Doubler) is a fantastic experience - 8 and up feels baggy and I personally don't like the look for beige-era power macs. But that RAM check sure takes time! Fingers crossed you can figure this out 😄
You can also force it to boot from a specific SCSI ID by holding down command + option + shift + backspace + [id] at startup, this was really useful for me when I copied the wrong OS on the IDE drive. It would detect the valid OS and boot from the IDE drive, but then it would just give a warning...
This was a great and super informative read, thank you! So my takeaway is that an HPV card in this 6100 is unlikely to make much of a difference 😄 I still want one since a couple of other games I want to try (The Sims, Alpha Centauri, etc.) require thousands of colors at... I want to say 800x600...
It definitely works on my Multisync monitor, so this seems to be on the Eizo's (and other flatscreens) inability to read the video signal. Now I want to find out if modern flatscreens with support for higher refresh rates can work 😗
Yes I was a bit surprised! It's not Power Mac 7100 level but certainly more than I thought 😄 took me all morning what with the stubborn ones next to the edge connector
This might also partially explain why the G3 accelerator in the 6100 with its pokey 33MHz bus gets such a big boost - it's running at basically the same rate (247MHz vs 250MHz) but gets 39.8fps over the 603ev's 26.9fps. Iirc the G3 has it's own beefy 1MB L2 cache (and is a far better chip...
(sorry for necro but this post is the first result on google)
I just recapped mine, made the list as I went. There is a lof of them, most of them are standard and you probably have them around if you do logic boards regularly, but there is one unusually large cap you might need to order. I...
I have a 6500 @ 250MHz, ran the tests using the same image that I used for the PM6100 I posted earlier
603ev @ 250MHz
Mac OS 8.1
internal video
software render @ 320x200, no doubling or interleave
demo2:
without L2 cache: 20.9fps
with 256k L2 cache: 26.9fps ( close to +30%!! )
that cache is...
Very cool! I am seeing the same thing on the same configuration (PM6100/66 w/ DOS compatibility card) connecting to my Eizo flatscreen does not give me an image. The screen is kind enough to tell me what the issue is:
So it seems the signal refresh rate is out of range for this screen. I have...
This is a very charitable use of the term "run" 😄
Btw the PM6100 G3 accelerator is a pretty cool design, it's narrow enough that it slots vertically into the PDS and looks like it has a passthrough for eg an HPV card, so I am trying to get a hold of one to see if it makes a difference.
Yes I should have specified - I took the G3 accelerator card out so those last numbers are just off the 601@66 with and without 256kB L2 cache (which I also physically removed for testing)
Cache: 601 seems to be around +10% for this with 256kB L2
G3: about 4x as fast, phew! (G3 has its own...
I think I posted this in the other thread but I hadn't actually carried it out at that point - I connected mine like this and it works great! I removed the connectors on the Mean Well, stripped the ends of the wires from the connector I took from the LC PSU, and taped both the Mean Well AND the...
