Direct write to Floppy disk from minivmac

I have definitely done this before using Basilisk II on a Mac. I am not sure whether or not Mini vMac can do it though. In Basilisk II, you can manually enter a path into the filesystem. Mini vMac usually just uses dragging. I don't think there is a way to access the /dev/ directory on a Mac...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

Yes, they should be the same. That was a typo. The iBooks are all IDE compatible.

How to install OS onto CF card

This is roughly how I set up my Powerbook 1400. I wanted to use System 7.6.1, but only could make 1.44MB floppy disks for my Powerbook. What I ended up doing, was formatting the Compact Flash card using the Powerbook, and then mounting it within Basilisk II on my modern computer. I then was able...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

Unfortunately, it would not work. This is a SATA SSD which is incompatible with the iBook G3. An adapter to make this drive fit would be too large for a laptop. The parts I linked retain the proper connectors for IDE, and they will fit inside your computer correctly. The SSD link I sent was for...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

This adapter should be exactly the same size as the original hard drive, so there shouldn't be any size concerns. I think they might be referring to another kind of adapter meant for desktop PCs rather than laptops like this one. The connector is 2.5" IDE which should also be compatible with the...

SE/30 where to start on Dead Screen

These should be adequate. There are a lot of toxic chemicals on these circuit boards (including lead), so putting them into a dishwasher that cleans things you eat off of doesn't seem like a good idea to me. A lot of people swear by this technique, but it doesn't seem very healthy to me. You...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

Not at all. :) I would definitely recommend replacing it with an inexpensive and speedier SSD drive though. Something like this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/mSATA-44pin-Notebook-Laptop-Enclosure/dp/B01GRMUQRG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ide+to+msata&qid=1609338268&sr=8-1 and...

Caught between a rock & a hard place: PRAM battery in 540c

This is a tricky problem! I think I would still attempt to remove the PRAM battery, despite the very brittle plastics. There is no absolute guarantee that the plastics will break, or that the battery will leak, but I personally would much rather glue plastics back together than repair a logic...

Stereo Microscope = 2 Video Cameras + Raspberry Pi(S) + Phone + Google Cardboard Headset?

Neat idea! I think there a few challenges to overcome in order to get this to work. The trickiest one is latency. Part of what makes using a real microscope great is that there is not any delay between moving your hand and seeing it move. Transmitting video data usually adds a delay of a few...

    Classic-Capacitor-Conundrum-Consultation

Hello, I am working through recapping my Classic's (630-0525) analog board, and I have another question about component values. DP5 and DP7 both looked very saturated in cap goo (the metal turned green), so I decided to pull them both off of the board. Unfortunately, my Isopropyl alcohol took...

Do I need to replace my flyback?

That flyback transformer looks like it has had a very difficult life. The brown glue around the center post started off as a light tan color, but it looks pretty burnt to me at this point. The brass-colored bracket probably needs to be connected for a reason (I think it has to do with...

    SE/30 restoration help

Can you provide some photographs of the logic board? These would help a lot in diagnosing the problems you are having with it. There is likely some degree of corrosion present on the board, as this is usually what causes the issues you are describing. It may just be hard to spot without some...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

It sounds to me like the best thing to do is make a bootable USB drive then. There are several guides and files available online detailing what to do. This link might help: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/115120/boot-from-usb-ibook-g4-power-pc

    Classic-Capacitor-Conundrum-Consultation

Thanks, everyone! I just placed my (ridiculously large) Digi-Key order. Hopefully, I will be able to bring a few Macintosh Classics back to life in the coming weeks. I'll try to keep this thread updated, as I am sure there will be some troubleshooting in my future.

    Classic-Capacitor-Conundrum-Consultation

Hello all, I have a Macintosh Classic Analog board that I am planning to recap, and I am now also the newest owner of four nonfunctional Classic logic boards. I'm trying to put together a shopping cart to order all of the appropriate components, but I am having trouble deciding which parts to...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

I suppose there is nothing at all wrong with buying a copy of Tiger off eBay. You just have to make sure to get a universal version for all the powerpc computers, and not a single machine/Intel version. I suggested it because I can't stand waiting for things to come in the mail. :)

    Strange SE/30 Simasimac

Update on this board: I decided to re-recap everything, as I wanted to make certain that there were not any shorts between the capacitors and traces nearby. I removed all of my capacitors, applied solder-mask to the many exposed traces I found, and put the capacitors back. I also removed a few...

Now, what's going on with this iBook G4?

You can also burn a DVD or USB of Tiger yourself, if you'd like. Since you already own several copies (albeit currently non-functional ones) of Tiger, I see no reason why the copies of Tiger floating around the internet should not work. In fact, it is probably less risky to do it this way, as a...

    upgrading ROM for Macintosh II?

I may be wrong here, but I think that there is more to HD floppy support than just ROMs. I think there is a SWIM chip that also is required in addition to ROMS for this to work. I believe that this is how Mac SE floppy upgrades work, at least.
