I think its still worth finding out. Its possible that the 400k may work if the prototype has a IWM on the logic board. If a few developers were testing the 400k around the time this prototype was manufactured, its possible that their work may have made its way to this machine. The external...
This is the approach I have taken when it comes to my G4 Cube. Right now I have the Cube, matching 17" Studio Display, HK USB Soundsticks/Sub, FW CD Burner, and a Superdisk USB floppy drive.
I may eventually do something similar to the 8600 I have but that is a long term project.
As for the...
Its possible that it may be able to load the 'new' OS (pre 1.0) by an external 400k drive that could have been imaged by software in System 7.
Still, I wish the guy good luck to get the unit booting. If it works, I am sure he will be able to get his $100k asking price.
I didn't get to asking about the Sony 400k, but I did direct him to a known source of 0.0-1.0 beta System Software that he could attempt to load on the unit.
There seems to be a lot of discussion on the subject whether the owners have attempted to boot it. I messaged him on ebay wondering if he had tried to use the unit or boot it in any fashion.
Here is his response:
Found that piece of trivia to be interesting. I am still one for seeing someone...
This could be a Variable Speed Overdrive that Newer Technology manufactured for various 68k machines including the IIfx. With the multiple oscillators and the wires connecting to the original on the logic board, it makes sense.
Sounds odd. Might be a bad disk image. I remember doing a 400k disk image on my 1400c running 8.6. It was able to create the disk image using Disk Utility, but after it was done it was unable to read the disk.
I would try another disk image or re-download the image in question and see if...
I'm sure someone has a few twiggy disks around. The original Lisa's were sold long enough for a good bunch of disks to be made before the Lisa 2/XL replaced it.
After a quick google, I think it has less to do with the OS itself, and more to do with some firmware updates released around the same time. I am sure it was one of those 'unofficial features' included.
I would think that it would be OSX that would have broke the floppy drive. I do know that Beige G3 units upgraded to OSX were unable to use their internal floppy drives.
Still, it would be interesting to see a working floppy modified to work inside an iMac.
After removing the logic board from a Bondie Rev A/B with a bad CRT. I noticed that there appears to be a spot on the motherboard for a floppy port, if one were to solder one to the board.
Does anyone have the parts/time/skill to test this theory? I have the part, but no time and no soldering...
The 7500/7600/G3 had finicky plastic parts that were easy to break. Further, installing a 2nd hard drive required a rather long cable and the RAM couldn't be too high, or it would make contact with the top case and the case wouldn't close properly.
Maybe its just me, but I have always disliked...
I don't blame Jobs for ditching the Outrigger style desktop macintosh. I found them bulky, harder to hide under the desk, and more difficult to work on. Unless iit was the slim style like the old PM6100, I think jobs did the right thing in killing the desktop style in favour of the iMac and...
This is my best conquest in some time.
Recently I posted in ehmac.ca (Canadian Mac Forum) replying to a classified ad where someone was offering another user a PBG4 for the cost of a ferry trip. The guy was a bit weird in his reply, so I snuck in and said I would take it if he doesn't want it...
Good to know. I'm starting to think that either the RAM or CPU is kaput here. As both logic boards produced the same results. The good thing of that is that I have two 'theoretically' working Lombard Logicboards.
Going by the image on the Macintosh XL, it was meant to be a file server. Notice the 3rd disk in the image is a 'Multi' something. Possible that prototype MultServer or some other device that was still at the prototype stage. I do wish we could know more on what was being tested for the...
I was attempting to sell this PB Lombard, but have had no takers. So I decided to swap the logic boards myself.
The original board would chime very static like and you could hear the HD power up, but the green light would not come on and it wouldn't do anything.
So I figured something was up...
I'd go for it.
Its finding the IIfx itself for something that isn't stupid money that can be painful. Even with 4 1MB SIMMS in it, you still have 4 open banks. It should be fairly easy to source another set of 1MB SIMMS to make it 8MB. 4MB SIMMS aren't that much more, but finding the 16MB can...
Lucky. All our electronics recycliables are sold for the metal. Once someone drops them off they are the 'property' of the recycling centre. One guy was willing to look the other way once and a while, but I stopped doing it as I didn't want to get him fired.
Its too bad as I have picked up...
