    128k/512k boot sequence

Try this article: Macintosh Startup Revealed: From Boot Blocks to Finder See also, Inside Macintosh, volume III, page 42 As to your particular problem, the ROM clears the screen to black very early in the boot process, even before the boot chime. So if you're seeing those bars, it means the...

Dumb AppleTalk Question: Networking Classic and SE

Is it an Apple-branded serial cable? The Apple StyleWriter cable will work to create a LocalTalk network between two Macintosh computers (or a Macintosh and a LaserWriter).

I can't get ImageWriter ii to work with Macintosh Classic

Does it have two arrows pointing opposite directions like this (or similar): You might have a third-party serial cable that's wired for a Mac printer, and they wouldn't put an Apple logo on it. If you still can't print even when you verify that the Select light is on, then I think it's most...

I can't get ImageWriter ii to work with Macintosh Classic

What 8-pin serial cable are you using? Is it marked with an Apple logo? If not, have you ever used that cable to print with another model of Apple printer from a Mac? The green Select light needs to be ON when you want to print, otherwise nothing will print.

I can't get ImageWriter ii to work with Macintosh Classic

For System 6, yes. The one ImageWriter icon in the chooser will work for both the old Imagewriter and your ImageWriter II. What printer cable are you using? Is the green Select light on?

SetDate CDEV and Clones = shenanigans

I've written "24-bit dirty" code by mistake, just using a .W length instruction instead of a .L length. It's insidious because the code will work just fine on some models of Mac, or in some common scenario, but then it crashes on another machine. It's due to the layout of the system heap or...

SetDate CDEV and Clones = shenanigans

His site offers SetDate 1.1 in a Compact Pro archive, dated Feb 2012.

SetDate CDEV and Clones = shenanigans

It's 32-bit dirty. It crashes my SE/30 running 7.5.3 when in 32-bit mode. I have to switch to 24-bit addressing, restart, then SetDate will work. It's definitely a slap job.

    RaSCSI Development Thread

Are you sure it needs to be a driver to run all the time? Both the Process Manager under System 7 and later, and MultiFinder on System 6 include provision for background application processing.

    Clipout for mini-vMac

Sure, but you, I, and others would be a lot happier if it had a debugger that could show you every object in every heap, the state of all low-mem globals, and any data structure like a Window record, parameter block record for I/O, etc... Have you ever seen the debugger that's in the Virtual II...

    iperf for 68k / System 6?

Are you writing your own software that uses Appletalk? Why not record the value of Ticks, then make an echo type request using DDP, and then when you get the response back, compare with the present value of Ticks?

    Clipout for mini-vMac

Compared to the world of Apple II emulators, with their sophisticated debuggers and wide variety of emulated peripherals, the world of classic Macintosh emulators is appalling! It's like the author puts in just enough effort to get the basic machine emulated, then stops all feature development...

    Clipout for mini-vMac

    Might be nothing you're doing wrong, but check the source code for Clipout. It's not requesting a PICT type from the Scrap Manager, so you won't get graphics out of it. It is coded to only request TEXT type. See this line: long L = GetScrap(h, 'TEXT', &offset);

    Do I need RF shielding?

Earlier this summer I placed an AM/FM radio with its antenna extended, right next to my Mac 512K or Mac Plus, and at some high-end frequency I could hear every action of the Mac. I could hear loops, disk access, and so many other noises. I tried the same thing with the Power Mac G3 and could...

    Lapis 10006 Rev #2 came with SE/30

I had my SE/30 open a few days ago and remembered to look at the card. It's similar, but some areas are different from your card. The Monitors Control Panel said that mine is a dual-page 1024x768 display card. It's black and white only.

    Lapis 10006 Rev #2 came with SE/30

I found one of those too in a broken SE/30 that I bought 2 years ago and fixed. It showed up in the Monitors Control Panel as a second (larger) screen (and the arrow pointer will move off the edge of the built-in screen and into this screen), but I don't have a monitor to actually connect to the...
