Check out the XLR8 website for overclocking your Mac. It's super easy. As far as software, I would recommend running Mac OS 9 and Photoshop 7, which has the improved painting engine (i.e. better brush customizations). You should be able to find a copy cheap on feeBay.
Cocoa PowerPC apps should be able to run on the Cocoa-based OS X. That's all there is to it. It's surprising to me that some of us accept that this will no longer be the case. Stop-gap or not, Rosetta works and it works seamlessly. There is no convincing reason to eliminate it. They can...
No more running PowerPC apps on Intel? Hopefully this just a beta thing. Otherwise, what the crap? Not that I mind owning more than one Mac but right now I have one Mac for running Classic PPC apps natively, one Mac for running OSX PPC apps natively, and one Mac for running OSX Intel apps...
Seemingly doable:
USB 2.0 (sorely desired)
Spaces would be nice
Pipe dream:
Protected memory
Hmm, that's about all I can think of. The funny thing is my wishlist for OS X is much longer and mostly involves the things that OS 9 can do.
Thanks for the replies. Lots of good info.
@Gorgonops, I'm mainly using this for Photoshop and After Effects in OS 9, and GarageBand and sound editing in OS X. Right now my B&W G3 serves the OS 9 duties while my PowerBook G4 handles sound and music apps in OS X. I'm looking for something to...
Cool, thanks! That helps a lot. I didn't realize I could drop a FW800 processor into a FW400. Never thought about it I guess. That's great to know. I'm definitely sticking to either a Dual 1GHz Quicksilver or Dual 1.25GHz FW400 MDD and nothing older. Looks like I'm leaning more towards the MDD...
I'm in the market for either a Quicksilver (Dual 1GHz) or a MDD (Dual 1.25GHz FW400) and wanted to get some opinions. I need something that boots Mac OS 9 natively and can run OS X at a usable speed and is reliable.
Speed - Would either machine have equivalent performance to my 12" PowerBook G4...
Cool story! Yeah, there seems to be a misinformed adage that when newer software or hardware comes out the older versions or models are automatically obsolete. Chalk it up to society's need to have the latest and greatest.
I run Photoshop 6 on my Blue & White G3 and aside from a couple...
"...rather than developing for OS X where the landscape keeps changing because Steve-O got a hemorrhoid or something"
lol, I know what you mean. I enthusiatically jumped into learning Cocoa when Panther was the new hotness. Unfortunately, real life always kept me from digging in too deep but it...
That's a good score. Yeah, you can't go wrong with a 12" PB (I'm posting from one!). Mine has performed great since I got it in '04. Biggest two ordeals I had were an HD swap and a battery recall. It's starting to show its age with YouTube videos but it still puts out when doing useful work!
I received a reply from Otherworld Computing (on a Saturday, no less!). I'm posting it in its entirety for future reference...
The response is Mac OS X-centric since Mac OS 9's Energy Saver control panel doesn't have a CPU usage slider but it was helpful nonetheless. So I guess the CPU bumps...
Okay I emailed OWC's tech support. In the meantime...
Metronome indicates that my bus speed is indeed set to 100MHz. I double checked my jumpers and they are correct for that setting (jumpers 5,6,8, and 9 set). TattleTech, on the other hand, says the bus speed is 76.73MHz (with the CPU speed at...
No dice. I moved the number one jumper to the number four position as shown here to no effect. Apple System Profiler and Metronome still report 650 MHz. TattleTech, interestingly, reports 500MHz (and did so before I switched the jumper as well). Hmm....
The machine:
B&W G3 (Rev B)
The upgrade:
PowerLogix G3 1.1GHz
The software:
Mac OS 9.2.2
CPU Director 1.5f6 (application)
CPU Director INIT 2.0b1 (extension)
The problem:
Metronome and Apple System Profiler report 650MHz as the CPU speed.
The gruesome details:
I'm using an older...
Thanks! I'm checking it out now and posting from my B&W running 9.2.2. It's so cool to see a modern forum render correctly under Mac OS 9. My machine doesn't feel so old now  . Thanks for all the work you're putting into this.
Nice work! It's good to see a quick-start for using MPW. One note, pressing 'command-return' is equivalent to using 'enter' on the numpad.
@Nathan: I'm fairly certain you can compile 68k code on a PPC with MPW. I've never done it personally. I started Mac programming with Codewarrior's Discover...
I don't know why that worked but it did! I tried just about everything and never thought to do that. Thanks! I owe you one!
Thanks I actually forgot about that. I did try the Radeon in the first slot but my Mac crashes at some point during the booting sequence. Not quite sure why. Things are...
