Bought a Lisa 2, dumped the disks!

The anti-glare filter was standard on all Lisa's from Apple.  They also came with a special cloth for cleaning the anti-glare filter.

Apple Lisa: It's all about power, right?

Exactly, this is my 4th post in this thread trying to get this point across!  Many folks also mistake the case interlocks doing their job as an PS issue.  I agree with the poster (who sold his Lisa's 16+years ago) that stated that many issues with other "vintage" systems are PS related (some...

Apple Lisa: It's all about power, right?

What goes wrong (other than 2/5 battery issues): 1. the keyboard foam pads break down, the cord gets stretched out. 2. the floppy drives go bad: broken eject gears, frozen grease, electronic issues, and the 800K copal drives SUN used burn up. 3. all the apple hard drives are junk 4. the pots...

Apple Lisa: It's all about power, right?

To address your original post: PS (and other) caps are not big Lisa issue, and while it's good maintenance to recap them, most of the time a non-functioning Lisa is not due to caps.  Other than battery corrosion on the 2/5's, most any Lisa you find will need the keyboard re-foamed, the floppy...

Apple Lisa: It's all about power, right?

OK, it appears the system this guy is referring to is here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Lisa-2-for-repair-or-parts-/191944905590?hash=item2cb0ced376:g:e6QAAOSwdzVXrXhl First of all, it's not a Mac XL, but a Lisa2/5 with a bunch of upgrades. The batteries have leaked, this means that the IO...

Apple Lisa: It's all about power, right?

Yes, you need a par port HD to run LOS. Technically, a "Mac XL" is really a Lisa2/10 with an internal 10 Meg widget drive.  But SUN sold many 2/10's with the internal HD removed to be used with MW+ only.   So unless the system has an internal par port HD (and it works, most Widgets are failing...

Apple Lisa: It's all about power, right?

True, but the SUN 800K upgrade does not effect the operation of the floppy as a 400K drive with the LOS.  Also, a 3rd party driver for the 800K driver exists, it allows you to fully use the 800K drive with the LOS.  It's very neat how it works, it fills one side of the disk then the other.  This...

    Potted Lisa Batteries?

The Lisa batteries will only retain the time & date for a few hours at most, and the hardware and software only support a 16 year range of starting in the 1980's or 1990's.   Why would it matter if you had to reset the clock if it's always over 20 years slow? Even if she did support the...

    Potted Lisa Batteries?

This makes no sense to me.  If someone was a "nickpick", they would want the batteries to look apple OEM, and they would most certainly not want card paper box full of "cheap dollar store epoxy".   The Lisa batteries function is of very limited use, so worthless in-fact that apple removed them...

    Differences between Lisa 2 models

The Lisa 2 pictured at that site has the screen mod ROMs (3A) and will not run the LisaOS as it sits.  There is no such thing as a "SUN" system, sun sold some upgrades (hardware and software), but nothing sun did makes a Lisa any less a of a Lisa.   like aplmak, I too see lots of discrepancies...

Last Palm Pilot model to use serial connection/Classic OS support?

FYI, the newest Palm OS 5.x-based Tungsten palms DO support serial comms, it's just that the serial is TTY level and not RS232.  These Palms and others that have the "Multi-connector": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Multi-Connector These can hotsync via serial, but you will need a TTY to...

Apple Lisa Sun Remarketing 2mb Expansion - What RAM Do I need?

I don't see any reason why those would not work, but for full disclosure, I have never tried the 3 chip variant's in any of my SUN boards, YMMV. Rick

Apple Lisa Sun Remarketing 2mb Expansion - What RAM Do I need?

You need 256Kx9 RAM - 30 Pin SIMMS (not 128Kb as in your last post).  Best to have the 9 Chip versions (256Kx1 bit), but the 3 Chip versions should also work ( 2 256Kb x 4 bit & 1 256Kb x 1 bit).  8 chip or 2 chip versions will not work.  I am sorry but I don't of a good source for them...

Apple Lisa Sun Remarketing 2mb Expansion - What RAM Do I need?

Normally, you would only have 3 of the 4 banks populated for 1.5 Meg (banks 1-3).  This card plus and apple 512K card = 2MB total the system max.  If you the use the SUN card fully populated, you must not have another memory card in the system or you will get an error. You must use 9 Bit (PC...

Video Out on the Lisa 1 and 2/5

I don't understand why the name of this tread is "Video Out on the Lisa 1 and 2/5",  All Lisa (AKA MacXL) models have a RCA video out connector, not just the 1 and 2/5.  It's just a mirror of the internal video signal, my guess is that apple intended this to used for attaching large...

    Apple Lisa disk images

Here's a link to get DART: http://macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=21842 FWIW, I had no problem making Lisa disks on powermacs, but you must use Disk4.2 or DART.  It's the newer 6.x versions of disk copy don't correctly copy the Lisa tag bytes. On a Powermac, at launch, DART will throw an error...

    Is my Apple III dead?

Apple /// systems used a mixture of 16K, 32K, and 64K DRAM chips depending on the version you have.  The 16K and 64K chips are very common and should be easy to find.  The 32K chips were never that popular and will be hard find.  This info will help you identify what board you have: "There are...

    Widget drive

There is nothing wrong with a "hotrod" Lisa.  I have 3 "SuperLisa's" and there is continued new Lisa hardware development.  The Lisa is an open-architecture system that was designed to be enhanced (like the Apple 2 line), adding to the system does not make it any less a Lisa. Rick

three cables in a Macintosh XL

There are 3 main revisions of the Lisa Hardware, the original with the twiggy drives (Lisa 1), the updated version with one Sony drive (Lisa 2) that is otherwise the same as a Lisa 1, and the version with the 10 meg widget drive (Lisa 2/10) that has many small differences from the earlier...
