It does go bwaaaaaaa, but not the same sort of bwaaaaaaa that the 6200 makes. The 5400 is less orchestral or "stringy" if you catch my drift.
Download Mactracker which is a free application detailing all Mac systems from the beginning, and it includes recordings of the startup sounds of all the...
A similar project was this one from the 2007 Retrochallenge (read page from the bottom upwards) where the contestant shoehorned a LC475 motherboard and the circuits from a 12" Apple display in the case of a Classic II. Pretty neat hack in my opinion but not one for the faint hearted by the looks...
That's a good one - it is quite unusual to find them with the stand and remote control included. So often I find eBay auctions for just the PowerCD itself with everything else missing, which is about as useful as a paperweight.
I would suggest having a play about with the brightness, focus, vertical sweep etc controls on the analogue board to see if it makes any difference to the display picture. They are small variable resistors on the board that can be manipulated with a small screwdriver. It is highly recommended to...
Nice score! This is a good time to be rescuing G3 iMacs because they're getting long in the tooth and plenty of people are selling them for next to nothing, or throwing them away.
This will change as time goes on and I expect G3 iMacs will become collectable novelties in the future. I would...
The 12" PowerBook are very attractive notebooks mainly because of their size. You can also get a good second hand one these days for about the same price as a new Asus eeePC but performance wise there's no contest! I remember the first time I saw a 12" PowerBook I actually thought it was a...
My Mini Dock does this to some extent too, though it more just doesn't release either side fully. The way around it seems to be to pull the handle up to it's fullest extent (towards the PowerBook) then wiggle the dock from side to side. Be careful though as the two clips that hold the Duo are...
This should link should provide suitable information: http://www.jagshouse.com/zipMacPlus.html
It describes how to use a Zip drive as a boot disk for a Mac Plus, but the information regarding drivers is there as well as a working download link for the Iomega driver version 4.2. For using the...
Shrinkwrapped PC Exchange - certainly is quite rare (but probably not valuable as you say). As for postmen, mine likes to drop parcels onto the doorstep from waist height > :( .
Does the 33MHz CPU make a great difference over the stock 25MHz? I'm tempted to get one (given the low cost) for my 520c but would like to know if it's worth it.
A 100 series adaptor provides more current than the Portable's adaptor and is often enough to get it going. The best adaptor to use is that for the 165c and 180c (M5652) as it provides more current than earlier adaptors. If the Portable won't start then try holding down the programmer's switch...
My PCI SCSI card is an Adaptec 7850 flavour card, model AVA 2906. A fairly common card so it could be possible that it is the same as yours. Drivers for OS X can be downloaded here.
Have a look inside and see if any of the internal cables have come loose. If you're inclined it may be worth looking for cracked solder joints on the analogue board too. Best to do this with the Plus unplugged for obvious reasons!
When you say the CRT turns on, does it actually light up?
In answer to your initial question, yes! The 1400 is a great early PPC portable which is suitable for many retro tasks, and has the benefit of being able to run System 7, 8 and 9. Many will agree that the keyboard on the 1400 is probably the best to type on of any notebook Apple has produced...
I'm always suspicious of auction descriptions written like that, ie. all capitals with spelling mistakes and bad grammar. It can mean the seller is not comfortable around computers which thus gives good grounds to question their description of the item as non working or otherwise.
Glad to hear...
