    Claris Home Page

Personally, I love Claris Home Page. It's the only webpage-authoring software I've ever seen that isn't absolutely terrible. I like it because it doesn't try to do anything fancy, it's just a word processor that saves as HTML. If you want to build a moderately-nice looking website that will...

    Compact Flash in se/30

Again, HDT 3.0 RAID isn't available on the SE/30 because it has a 53c80 SCSI controller instead of a 53c96. For this same reason, SoftRAID doesn't work on the SE/30 either. They both require SCSI Manager 4.3. Does anyone know of any RAID software besides Remus that is known to work on the SE/30?

AsanteFast NuBus 10/100 on OS 8.6 or 9.1?

I always wanted one of those 100Mbps NuBus cards back when I was using NuBus PowerMacs, but could never get my hands on one. :-( I hope you have good luck getting it working!

    Compact Flash in se/30

The ACARD chip is just the SCSI-IDE chip that their adaptors are based upon. In the best possible case it'd be six months to a year before I had adaptors, so don't plan anything on them happening. :-D If you want to do RAID on the SE/30, I don't think you have any choice but Remus; when I was...

    USB vacuum tube amplifier!

I don't worry too much about audio quality of MP3s. I rip everything I get new as 160Kbps MP3s, but I don't play MP3s when I want to sit down and pay careful attention to listening to music. I have LPs for that. For just background music when I'm working or whatever, I find the quality of MP3s...

Anybody have the driver for a NuBus Jackhammer card?

Awesome. If my page is broken or something, let me know so I can fix it. :-D

    Compact Flash in se/30

With the low power-draw of the CF cards, I think one could do RAID 1 inside the SE/30 and sleep a little more soundly at night. Remus RAID will do RAID on the onboard SCSI of the SE/30, despite it not being SCSI Manager 4.3 compliant. Of course, this would require the purchase of TWO SCSI-IDE...

Anybody have the driver for a NuBus Jackhammer card?

I haven't seen any of the hotline servers online in months... do I need you to PM me an update?

Anybody have the driver for a NuBus Jackhammer card?

Gizoogle to the rescue! "JackHammer NuBus driver" lists my homepage on the first page of results: http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/stuff/JackHammer/

    Slocket adapter

With enough hacking, a pair of slockets lets you run dual talutans in the excellent old SuperMicro dual-slot-one boards. :-D For those who are less silly, they're still great to let you use whatever processor you have laying around to upgrade your Slot1 box. Congrats!

    yarc zuma se nubus card

Another common application for YARC's RISC co-processor cards was as a dedicated 3d-rendering accelerator. The MacRageous card is one that comes to the top of my head as going in a NuBus Mac to accelerate apps like StrataVision 3D. Apparently this board is a general-purpose PowerPC coprocessor...

Two SE/30s with identical no-startup problems.

Yes! A sticky is a great idea! We have several members here who have done much work with the ailing SE/30--surely we can establish a good point of reference for these machines.

Macintosh IIci: daystar turbo 040 33 mhz vs stock.

Also, the Turbo040s overclock really well. If you're moderately good at soldering, it's easy to put in an oscillator socket and shoot for 50MHz. I've got mine (with a 40MHz-rated chip) stable at 48MHz and I think it's limited mostly by the available cooling inside the SE/30 case.

Macintosh IIci: daystar turbo 040 33 mhz vs stock.

Yes, if you install the DayStar control panel, it will let you enable the cache on the board, which improves the performance dramatically in a lot of situations. The cache may be on by default, but it's so easy to install the control panel, why not?

Anybody use a Linux machine as their main desktop machine?

It's text-based and easy. :-D It does very little or nothing unless you tell it to; this is both it's greatest strength and greatest shortcoming.

Anybody use a Linux machine as their main desktop machine?

I use OpenBSD on my AMD64 machine at work; it's a lot like linux but more spartan. Works great for what I need. I only really use my TiBook for web browsing and playing Diablo II. :-)

What unix for a dual 604e 200MHz in an 8600?

YDL is OK if you're OK with a redhat-based distro; I used it for a while on a PowerBook 5300.

    Quadras: 650 vs 630 vs 800 vs 950

Peltier + liquid cooling is the win; remember that when you're peltier cooling you need to shed not only the heat from the CPU but also 50+ W of heat from the junction itself; watercooling helps greatly in that capacity.

    68040 upgrade cards in IIci

Well, scratch that idea! In my SE/30 with 48MHz Turbo040, with Enhanced PowerMath I get the following results: 39.8 CPU, 9.33 FPU (Norton System Info 3.5.3). With Enhanced PowerMath turned off, I get the same results. You can really see how important memory bandwidth is to some of the tests...

    Sega Dreamcast

Also, if you can get the fishing controller cheap, grab it. Apparently you can play Virtua Tennis and some other games using the fishing controller in a very Wii-like fashion... several years too early.
