During my attempts to replace the battery on a Macintosh II, I came across this blown-apart mess on the board. The unit was still working (besides some video issue that I chalked up to my improper monitor), so I assumed whatever repair this was fixed that issue. However, while trying to figure...
It was a Dealer 128K that was upgraded to a 512K either third party or by Apple. I assume since it was on display and the 128K/512K look very similar, they slapped the badge on front to say “yep, this is a 512K!”
And... The First HD20 Retrofit project is complete! This unit looks like a normal HD20 save for the SD card sticking out the back. While the insides are messy, it'll work until better mounting solutions exist.
Oh, another piece of info. The HD20 cable works straight out with no modifications. AFAIK you can swap this into a HD20 without too much issue. In fact, you won’t even need a power cord for it.
Oh, I did what you recommended a week ago. I opened the HD20 up in my IIsi, deleted all of the original system files, and copied on the files from my boot disk.
I’m finally back! Sorry about disappearing. I replaced the OS using my IIsi and a boot disk I had. The machine boots just fine, but I ran into two tiny issues.
1. On the IIsi, the “boot” 20mb partition is the DogCow, and the second 20mb partition is the standard icon. However, on the 512K, both...
Ah, yeah, I'm a little too dumb for that sorta stuff. I'll work with the images I got and a hex editor to check what comes up. I'll have to put down messing with this sorta stuff for a bit, but the next project will be installing this into an HD20's case and loading a ton of data on it.
Thanks for the image and pointers for changing the icon! Did you use FDISK on Linux for making the image as well? And if so, do you have pointers for where I could get similar software on Windows? I don't typically use Linux but I could set up WSL if needed.
It works with my IIsi! Seems like everything is functional. Toss me that HD20 image when you get it. I don't really know how to set up these disks myself. For example, would I edit the icon image by editing the partition data?
Unfortunately, despite being a hobbyist, I don't think I have any spare resistors that could be used for this purpose. I assume without a resistor would fry the chip. Don't have a O-Scope or a fast enough multimeter. I'll check around and see though.
Wrote that image to a floppy disk. The system does detect drive now when I use my HD20 disk, but then gets stuck on the "Welcome To Macintosh" screen and flickering. When booting a disk without the HD20 program, it does not pop up at all on Finder nor does it request to be formatted. Running the...
I've assembled the kit I got and unfortunately ran into some issues. When plugged into my 512k, the power LED came on but no access happened, even with the HD20 boot disks. The HD20 test fails instantly, saying "Init Driver Failed -> Rene Driver." I can't tell if it's my SD card or my soldering...
Stupid question, but does anyone know where I can find build instructions? I’m currently going off of photos but would like to know specific locations for resistors and all that.
