    7100 dead now

You mentioned that you repasted the CPU - hopefully this isn’t the problem, but my understanding is that the 601s are extremely fragile and are easy to crack the die when reinstalling the heatsink. I’d try to check other issues first (power/ground shorts, proper voltages, etc, visual inspection...

    PowerBook Duo battery replacement

Also, the keyboard interfaces with the PG&E, so the soft power button above the keyboard doesn’t work if the PRAM battery is dead and the Duo hasn’t been booted since being reconnected to power. In this case, the power button on the back of the Duo can be used to force power on, which will allow...

    PowerBook Duo battery replacement

Here’s the data sheet for the modern-ish version of the chip, pin 3 is a no-connect: https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/DS2401.pdf Note that Apple ordered a custom variant with their own fixed-prefix to identify them as the manufacturer and to identify the...

    PowerBook Duo battery replacement

The pinout order is: BATT(+) Thermistor GND 1-Wire ID chip BATT(-) So - A is the thermistor (so the Duo can read the battery temperature as part of the charging algorithm), B is the DS2400 ID chip, and there should be two fuses inline with the cells (C is one of them, there should be another...

PowerPump"ACCELERATOR" from NewerTech: is it worth cloning?

Very cool! It’s considerably more complicated and full featured than I expected. Here’s my guess about how it’s working after reading the manual (but I haven’t tried looking up the IC part numbers, this is all speculation): 1. The clips on the oscillator force the enable low, disabling the...

Using Magneto Optical drives on vintage 68k Macs

There are a few sellers with 640 MB Fujitsu MCC3064SS drives around $60, mostly selling out of China. I picked one up a while back to replace a dead one, and while it took forever to get here it worked great. YMMV of course, but I was happy with how it turned out for me.

Duo 210/230: fancy artwork on early PG&E chips?

That’s pretty cool! My 230 that I recapped has the normal text-only markings. Recapping my other 230 is low on my list of projects, but I’ll post pictures if I find the line art in that one.

Just got a Macintosh 512k and I have some questions

The TashTwenty was created by @Tashtari, as documented in this thread: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/tashtwenty-single-chip-dcd-hard-disk-20-interface.39357/ Ko-Fi is the platform Tash uses to sell his projects, here’s his shop link: https://ko-fi.com/tashtari/shop

    Iomega scsi zip 1GB

I’m glad you got it working! For context, the 29-pin vs 30-pin distinction was because Apple originally created two different SCSI cables for the PowerBooks. The 29-pin one was for connecting standard SCSI devices to the PowerBook, while the 30-pin one was for connecting the PowerBook to...

Calling all ROMs! Collecting DeclROM data

Does anyone have a DeclROM dump for the Apple IIe card (I’m assuming it has a DeclROM)? If not, would someone be willing to dump it and share?

The last of the "subnotebook collection"

Did you replace the inductors, or just clean under them and re-install the old ones?

The last of the "subnotebook collection"

Ah, my mistake. Did you do a video on recapping yours? Ah, good to know to check the inductors!

The last of the "subnotebook collection"

I’m pretty sure that @3lectr1cPPC has recovered a number of PB 100s, and that (1) recapping was absolutely necessary, and (2) it was a bit of a labor of love and somewhat painful to get them working again. But it would be a shame to not get it working again!

Do capacitors go bang!? Quadra 650 psu

I would try a recap and repair - they can explode, usually when the polarity is reversed, but they can be damaged by excessive voltage fluctuations. Since the scorch mark appears to be on the bottom of the board and the metal enclosure under it, I’m not sure that’s what happened. My guess is...

Replacement inductor for Aluminum Powerbook G4 1GHz?

That’s definitely an inductor. Before you replace it, try covering it with some Kapton tape (or paper, if you don’t have any Kapton. I’m wondering if the cover is pressing down on the exposed leads on top of the inductor and shorting it out. It’s probably part of a switching regulator circuit...
