Replace the PRAM battery.
If the PRAM battery is missing or dead it will behave that way. (This will also affect sleep/wake as well.)
The regular battery probably has just enough juice to keep the PRAM from resetting.
Mac cases are not made of nylon.
Also I remember hearing/reading somewhere way back when that part of the reason the old Macs are so brittle is because of the flame retardant chemicals that were added to the plastics back then.
I don't have bench marks any more but when I went from 256 to a 1 meg cache in my 8500 the difference was huge.
I forget what I paid for the cache, $100+? but it was worth it at the time.
When I revived my 8500 a few months ago I couldn't get it to boot from the XLR8 carrier card (with a G4)...
Back-in-the-day my 8500 started out as a 120.
I upgraded it later with a 233 processor, a 1 meg cache, and 4 meg of vram. (The 1 meg cache was a big performance boost!)
I forget exactly how much memory I had, 384mb? Something like that.
(I was able to get memory from Techworks at a discount...
