Replace the PRAM battery. If the PRAM battery is missing or dead it will behave that way. (This will also affect sleep/wake as well.) The regular battery probably has just enough juice to keep the PRAM from resetting.

The FW ports were in a separate module that connected to the board.

The glue probably cyanoacrylate (super glue) or something similar. It, along with the plastic is pretty brittle. Here's a vid that shows one method.

It's glued together. You'll have to use a thin, sharp knife to carefully pry along the seam, break the glue, and separate the case.

Mac cases are not made of nylon. Also I remember hearing/reading somewhere way back when that part of the reason the old Macs are so brittle is because of the flame retardant chemicals that were added to the plastics back then.

Since I (apparently) see that solder bridge on both chips I would assume it's supposed to be there.

I don't have bench marks any more but when I went from 256 to a 1 meg cache in my 8500 the difference was huge. I forget what I paid for the cache, $100+? but it was worth it at the time. When I revived my 8500 a few months ago I couldn't get it to boot from the XLR8 carrier card (with a G4)...
