External HD for SE/30 not recognized

Under the "without modification" disclaimer, I'll just link this in case it's of help: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/backporting-hfs-to-mac-os-8-0-and-earlier.35742/ -- Elliot got HFS+ working on 68k 7.6. Also, despite other people really liking SilverLining, I've had the best luck...

Realtek RTL8139D PCI Network Card Compatible with a PowerMac 6500?

"9.2.2 System file for pre-G3 Power Macs" is originally from https://macos9lives.com/downloads -- if you're planning to spend any time on that system, I highly recommend registering on that site, as the forums can be very useful for triaging OS9-specific issues (and the people who developed that...

Performa 475 chimes but does not boot - revival

Thanks! This is a very useful run-through for this series. What I have ended up doing for my headless Macs is I plug in a dummy plug (grounded sense lines, resistors to select capabilities), and then Tinbuktu can happily connect remotely at higher resolutions.

SPACEBALLS : the black ribbon -or- Fixing an ImageWriter II black ribbon

I kept my IWII going for years, with that foam being the major thing that needed replacement. It was a sad day, however, when my last colour cartridge stopped printing yellow. Re-inking the black ribbons was easy... just roll them over some black ink until fully re-saturated; but I never...

Apple ImageWriter - anyone know why it's so **** heavy?

Here's a good manual that may shed some light on the reason: https://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/www.bitsavers.org/pdf/citoh/printer/C.Itoh_TEC_8510/E1-1645Z_C-Itoh_8510A_Users_Manual_Nov1982.pdf -- the 8510 was rebranded as the ImageWriter by Apple, but it's the same device. I seem to remember...

    Christmas LAN party preparation

Yes, you need RJ14 and the terminators (although you can make up a set of terminators pretty easily based on that photo alone). You also need to ensure that you aren't using a TX/RX crossover cable (I used to have one of my RJ14 cables crossed for direct computer-to-computer serial...

    ”Early” 128k Macintosh Values?

Yeah; it's one of those cases where you'd make more selling all the components separately.

    Color Dark Castle

For those interested in recovery, a trick I used to use once other recovery techniques had been abandoned (and as much flux data was captured as possible), is crack the disk cases open and wipe the film with a *clean* silk cloth. Re-assemble, and more often than not, the data would be readable...

    Christmas LAN party preparation

Bolo, Strategic Conquest and Spectre were my go-tos -- partially because they'll work with anything back to a Plus (possibly also a 512Ke). Also NetTrek and NetRisk, but they're really not as fun.

Thanks, @RepairManiac ! This is an invaluable contribution to Apple history.

iBook G4 - Bluetooth File Sharing in 10.4

They need to have compatible file sharing profiles available. Without that, you can just use the base level bluetooth profiles that don't require pairing to function -- you can send short messages that way.

From happy Mac to flashing question mark during boot?

Does the drive have a System folder that is not only blessed, but functional? That behaviour is something I've seen regularly where the system folder itself was corrupted. Blessed, so you get the happy mac, but then it fails the bootstrap process, so you don't get the "Welcome to Macintosh"...

Am I too dumb to burn a pre-OSX CD?

There's multiple threads on MG on this very topic :) The other thing at play is that Apple used two different drivers on its bootable CDs. Depending on the driver, you may have issues booting from a non-Apple CD player, and you may have issues booting from particular hardware. There's a...

    AOL Dialup is gone!

Around here it's ~$70 for internet, dynamic IP - $100 if you want local TV, $120 if you want base package and a land line. IP only updates if I reboot the FO modem though, and I've got scripts on the back end to update domains if the IP changes.

    spftp.info.apple.com moved?

Everything on info.apple.com went away years ago... I believe at the end of 2012. https://archive.org/details/download.info.apple.com.2012.11 is online; IA doesn't mirror FTP though; https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22spftp.info.apple.com%22+mirror only shows two hits.

    AOL Dialup is gone!

Well, I've been making sure that in every house I've been in for the past decade, it's had cat5e drops in each room, and PoE provided from the switch. In my latest place, there's no phone jacks in most parts of the house anymore, but some rooms have 5 or 6 ethernet jacks. I'm considering...

    Restoration CD for market software

Here's the note for 7.1P2: So it looks like starting with 7.1P2, they pre-decompressed all the resources, which not only would have sped up first use, but also provided a more accurate free space count.

    Performa 640cd dos compatible

I have to admit; first thing I did when fink changed his sig was use uBlock Origin to filter it out. Obviously, not an option on older browsers and smartphones.

    Restoration CD for market software

You know, I somehow glossed over this in Apple's tech note in the past: This means that all the Performas where we had Apple Backup restore images before likely didn't have the original as-shipped content: from the factory, a bunch of files would have had compressed resources, and when the user...
