Okay, so now I wanted to simply post my progress on the foam blocks. Just a screenshot from what I've been doing in Blender, to show that I'm almost ready to 3D print some foam blocks for a (miniature plastic) prototype.
So I've been thinking this through, and maybe one thing I might end up...
IWM already has a bunch of FPGA re-implementations, here's one made by Steve Chamberlin inside the released Yellowstone design info:
https://github.com/steve-chamberlin/fpga-disk-controller
I'd think SWIM would not be that much harder to make your own re-implementation, and the RTC already has...
Oh yeah, another thing. What font has Apple used for Japanese text on their boxes, marketing material, and the like? Right now the strokes are just individually drawn as vector graphics lines, but from the photos the font definitely looks mundane in terms of decoration.
English: Keyboard not...
@Kai Robinson It would be really great to use I2C capabilities of the AVR to handle serial communications, that would hopefully speed up serial communications processing enough that a 32.768kHz system clock wouldn't be an issue any longer. Now I'm looking through the Universal Serial Interface...
Yeah, if the AVR internally generated RC oscillator is at least as good as Raspberry Pi's small, 19.2MHz crystal, you can easily get ahead/behind by 15 minutes a month, versus 1 minute a month or less with a good stable 32.768kHz crystal. With NTP time sync, you really don't notice, but if you...
Does this still allow the AVR to run faster than 32.768kHz during instruction execution? I felt like I already covered that ground and didn't find the results very promising, but correct me if I'm wrong.
@Kai Robinson Are you looking at the old copy from the pinned commit? I did make several changes around that area, check the latest version on the master branch.
But if you want to use timer 1 instead of timer 0, I'm still using timer zero on the latest copy.
@smiba Interesting, does that only apply to elemenoh's old copies? Looking at my generated copies, the PDFs do have searchable text it seems. Really, the two are supposed to be the same, we're working out getting synced.
Nice, looks like the box is about the same size as Macintosh SE and Macintosh SE/30, along with rather similar box printed designs. The final question would come down to how the foam blocks on the inside of the box look like, considering the keyboard is included in-box.
One thing I guess I'm...
RTC chip + translator AVR is indeed totally another possibility that would allow for using ATTiny85 in one of the smaller package sizes. I'm guessing the main benefit of this layout would be potentially reduced power consumption... due to the increased complexity of having two chips rather than...
@elemenoh Great to see you back, looks like you've duplicated the fixes already in my fork. I'd recommend reverting and I can create a pull request to bring in all my fixes I've applied so far.
Good thing modern replacement RTCs and logic boards are up and coming. Until recently, Macintosh SE and SE/30 Maxell bombed boards felt like a real bummer.
A few quick updates here. After a little bit of trouble with working out the perspective unproject from the photos, I'm making progress on creating 3D models of the foam blocks. The trick to remember is that conventional DSLR prime lenses move the lens outward during close focus, so the actual...
And I didn't place my 2 orders yet... well by the time I get my other projects done and I'm ready for this one, I'm guessing the next RaSCSI revision will be out and about.
A note you can add to the BOM for the PCB. Crystal Y1 should have a load capacitance of 12.5pF. This is tne most common kind of 32.768kHz crystal but maybe it's worth stating explicitly since the matching of the corresponding capacitors depends on this.
@Phipli The 2-digit year issue is an OS issue, the RTC only keeps track of time in seconds. Also, I'd say being 2040-proof is mostly an OS issue too, the OS needs to make a decision where in the extended PRAM memory to store the high-order time bytes. The OS can also update those manually as...
Another error spotted while being a user of the SE/30 schematics. Page 4, the RTC chip pin label "D" was erroneously transcribed to a zero. I've fixed the error and uploaded corrections to my GitHub repository.
I haven't yet carefully eyed down the original schematics to verify there are no...
So, the first question. Who wants to try out a replacement RTC that's pretty much ready to go?
https://github.com/quorten/macsehw/tree/385867165613ad08207191b636d70cf82b467505/firmware/rtc
Now, for the tech discussion. Unfortunately, I found out that the ATTiny85 does not have the hardware...
Alright... I've tested my RTC firmware under simavr simulation with a nice interactive test bench setup that can also quickly be turned into an automated test suite, and I've fixed two small bugs. Now the firmware properly supports the entire PRAM register access protocol and can be used as...
