Logic Board reworking: A Tale of Two IIcx

Serious egg on face moment. I had MODE32 V1.2 installed on top of System 7.5 . Explains everything. Corrupted files. Why it took a clean reinstall to get back to level ground. I still had the no-MODE32 clean install of 7.5 on my internal disk. I installed the System 7.5 version of MODE32...

Logic Board reworking: A Tale of Two IIcx

As of Monday night, the system was reliably running 7.5 with 16MB using Bank A only. No new signs of disk corruption appeared. I booted off of an external disk and put a clean install on the internal drive without any mysteries. The new internal install boots and is reliable, I still have...

Logic Board reworking: A Tale of Two IIcx

@falecore - glad that this lengthy topic is encouraging someone out there. I have a CayMac ROM SIMM.. anyone know how to force it to do the RAM test on power-on when there's 16MB or more on the board? Will it provide the sort of bank or byte fingerprint that is displayed with a Sad Mac? I...

Logic Board reworking: A Tale of Two IIcx

Got some disk corruption overnight. My guess is the RAM address lines. I replaced the RAM bank muxes UH1 - UJ3 due to corrosion when I replaced the PSU on-off logic, and so now I just need to probe the traces and be sure I didn't break any, or leave opens between the leads and the pads. Will...

Details: some elbow-grease req'd to add NIC to SE FDHD

Mine's different. Although the 26LS32 is still there, I think the ST-NIC handles the support provided by outboard logic in the Tinker Different schematics.

Logic Board reworking: A Tale of Two IIcx

I think one of the two IIcx's may now be stable. Taking what I learned from others here in eliminating the video jitter from an SE, I resoldered about a quarter of the joints on the logic board. Things I thought "looked fine" before. I focused my rework on the `030 because the logic board came...

Details: some elbow-grease req'd to add NIC to SE FDHD

One of my IIcx's was in its happy-chime mood today (that one is very sensitive to flexing of the logic board.. re-solder party, soon) and I determined that the Asanté MCNB Revision A will not link with an auto port. It will link 10M full, though, so again - something was gained. So, nice tip...

Details: some elbow-grease req'd to add NIC to SE FDHD

Summary: All but one of my legacy Mac NICs can link to an auto port. Thanks for the feedback, all - it is nice to go full duplex! Details: My NuBus test systems are both undergoing restoration, so I cannot test my NuBus NIC. The Cabletron SE will form a link with an auto port on the...

SE video: almost perfect, but, it 'flinches'. (video = 1000 words)

I do believe this is fixed. Thanks all for the guidance!

SE video: almost perfect, but, it 'flinches'. (video = 1000 words)

Reflowing the flyback, the TDA1170, and the passives 'near' the TDA1170 may have fixed it. I need to sit with the machine for more than fifteen minutes to be 100%, but barring wild optimism, it looked solid while I ran some networking tests. If this was the cure, then lesson learned: even...

SE video: almost perfect, but, it 'flinches'. (video = 1000 words)

@Callan - I have considered starting to replace the passives.. the small caps and the resistors. The schematics gained from the links on these replies are helping me I know what power each resistor should handle. Less confident on selecting correct replacements for the inductors. But good idea...

SE video: almost perfect, but, it 'flinches'. (video = 1000 words)

@finkmac - OK, I actually do have a YouTube account (I thought they GC'd it years ago). If the BU406 is the HOT, I replaced it Friday with its modern, higher-rated equivalent BU406G. I sourced mine from onsemi. @Callan - I was reflowing joints Friday. Most appear to be quite good, still shiny...

Details: some elbow-grease req'd to add NIC to SE FDHD

The workshop's upstream connection for this SE is on a leaf switch, a Netgear GS308E using a 1m CAT6 patch cable. From what little I know about autonegotiation - I may be wrong - it is possible for a downstream port that operates only at 10/full and does not autonegotiate to force a...

SE video: almost perfect, but, it 'flinches'. (video = 1000 words)

@finkmac - I'll have to view that; I actually do not have a YouTube account :) and now they require one. @djc6 - I've done a lot of that. I've replaced the caps, the BU406, but not some of the remaining diodes. I've replaced the one that attaches directly to the heat sink (CR2 IIRC), so...

Details: some elbow-grease req'd to add NIC to SE FDHD

Here we go. My epic SE restore saga - final chapter only. 'Epic' means long-winded. But this is why we're all here, right? Sharing what it takes to keep getting the most out of our legacy Macs? This Cabletron Ethernet NIC is split between a PDS board parallel to the logic board and a...

SE video: almost perfect, but, it 'flinches'. (video = 1000 words)

I have restored an SE. After recapping the analog board, and going back today to replace CR2 and Q2 b/c the Dead Mac Scrolls described a symptom that might have been this one, I haven't resolved the final video issue. The video is solid, but at unpredictable intervals the entire screen...

Coming right up! I'll have it open again b/c I have decided to try and fix the very slight jitter on the video. Why not go for 100.0% restored? 🤓 The parts (NP cap, diode, transistor) arrive later today.

I was able to fit a Cabletron Ethernet NIC into the SE FDHD - a bit tight with two floppies and an HDD in there. Had to cut some sheet metal from the HDD tray to get sane clearance. This was my final goal for this restored Mac, but after years of using it with serial PPP, it's fun enough with...
