NMP 2000 (My First Newton, for reals this time).

The Newton doesn't charge the AA batteries in the tray. You need to pull the tray and install a new set of batteries. Keep 2 sets of AA just for the Newt and rotate when needed I can't remember what battery life was like with alkalines - I've been using NiMH batteries for a long time

NMP 2000 (My First Newton, for reals this time).

Before you buy the Radio Shack adapter please do yourself a huge favour and buy a REAL Newton adapter. There have been too many stories about fried Newts and eMates. If the adapter is too expensive, find a AA battery tray and use rechargeable batteries.

    USB Serial Adapters

Have you considered using ethernet instead of USB->serial adapter?

    USB Serial Adapters

I think that the iogear USB->serial adapter works under x in native mode

    eMate 300 (my first newton!!)

If you use a non-Newton adapter, you run an extremely high risk of frying your little green friend. There have been a lot of horror stories over the years of new-to-the-Newton users buying third party adapters and having problems.

    eMate 300 (my first newton!!)

Whatever you do, don't use a non-Newton AC adapter with a 2000/2100/eMate. You will be asking for a HUGE problem. Your best bet is to use NiMH AA batteries in the AA battery tray if you don't have the battery pack for the 2000/2100. Charge them in an external charger. I can't remember if the...

    Monochrome monitors

The portrait displays were awesome for writing because you could see an entire page in one glance. You can still use an Apple TPD with a more recent Mac if you have the 13W3 cable and Mac-> VGA adapter and a video card that supports the resolution of the monitor

2000 vs. 2100: what are the differences?

    I agree 100%

2000 vs. 2100: what are the differences?

The heap (dram) is the only significant difference between the two. The extra heap in the 2100 makes a huge difference to overall performance when you are running multiple apps, in my opinion.

    Monochrome monitors

I used to own two of the Apple 2 page displays. I had them sitting side by side on my desk for years. When you are doing page layouts with lots of text nothing is better than greyscale. They were sharp and bright, weighed a ton, and kicked out a tremendous amount of heat.

    Newton 2000/2100 cases

It may be difficult and/or difficult to track down a 2100 case. Have you asked a WTB question on the Newtontalk list? Someone there may have a spare or know of a place to get one

    eMate 300

Worth anything? Where the eMate really excels is the ability to be used as a long battery life word processor. It has a minimum of distractions and you can also quickly add sketches into your text docs. Since you are going into teaching and you don't mind using vintage computers, think of it...

    Newton 2000/2100 cases

DDTM, Wow! That will be awesome when you get it done. I had been thinking more along the lines of cutting the dark grey jogj high density foam that comes as packing material to the size and shape of the 2100 or just using velcro to strap the 2100 down inside the case.

    Newton 2000/2100 cases

There were a couple of cases that you could look for... The Apple made ballistic nylon case that held the 2100 and the Newton keyboard. Has the Newton logo stitched on the front. Neoprene slip case for just the 2100. I can't remember who made it but it is black on the outside and blue on the...
