Yes, you can use an SE/30 board in an SE chassis (the pinout to the analog board is the same). I get a similar screen you have when I remove the ROM SIMM on my SE/30 board. Not saying that's your issue, but it might be a place to start. These boards can be tricky to troubleshoot!

Probably a dumb question but where are you finding your sockets/ports/headers? Are you using peconnectors.com? I am starting a build here soon but still need to do some ordering. I agree that although it might be more work up front, adding a socket would save lots of time in the event of a bad chip!

The 15” non-unibody MBP isn’t known for being very robust or reliable (might not be worth fixing). As for the 13” unibody models, if you’re lucky it could be the DC in boards or a bad keyboard/power button. Worst case they’re liquid damaged.
