So I finally picked up a dirty unloved 128k Mac on eBay for $200 - a crazy price, but what the hell.
Anway, turns out it has a Macs-a-Million upgrade installed which involves a bunch of soldering, Mac Plus ROM chips etc
What would you do? Try and remove the upgrade and restore it to stock or...
I should mention that everthing was connected with a Synoptics 10B-T hub (not a switch) as I've read that these old devices have trouble negotiating connections with 100/1000B-T networks.
I don't know why this isn't working, so I'm looking for some advice on where to start.
I have a linux based netatalk server that runs perfectly well serving up files via ethernet, even to an old SE/30 with an Asante ethernet card.
I'm trying to hook up a Mac Plus and SE to the netatalk server...
Well, that didn't work.
I made a shield of double layered aluminum foil between two sheets of paper and placed it between the motherboard and the CRT with no benefit.
Put the original CPU in and all is well.
Frustrating.
Might have to throw this this in the trash heap.
I haven't seen this discussed before, nor mentioned in my Dead Mac Scrolls book
I have an SE/30 that was working just fine stock, but after installing a DayStar socketed 50Mhz upgrade and a MacCon PDS slot ethernet card, the screen is "twitchy"
The best I can describe it is that the screen...
What are you trying to accomplish?
A generic 7.0.1 disk can run Disk First Aid on it.
Beyond that, those old versions of Norton SHOULD work. Can you verify that you can boot from another floppy to make sure the drive isn't borked?
I actually just bought a nice little SCSI MO drive on eBay with a bunch of 230MB disks. Works great for backing up software and booting up old machines like my Plus that lack a hard drive.
Formats just fine with any of the usual SCSI tools too. No special drivers needed.
I've put together a small Linux file server for my classic Mac network and can now connect to it over both Ethernet and LocalTalk (via an Asante bridge) with anything from a Mac Plus running 6.0.8 to my iMac running 10.7.
What I'm wondering is, what is the most convenient way to store software...
I had several AztecMonsters on order with Artmix and he never sent them, so I got a refund.
Looking at the board design, it looks like a pretty simple layout (not that I'm an EE by any means)
Also, the chip used is a standard ACARD ARC-760B, which if it could be sourced relatively cheaply, we...
I have the EXACT same problem on my PB100.
Got it off Craigslist a year ago and fired it up no problem. Took it out again a month or so later and black screen.
I can hear the drive spin up (which it wouldn't do when I first got it until I gave it a few good whacks)
I'm reluctant to start...
I remember back in the day people converting iMac logic boards into headless 1U rackmount servers.
Just a thought for people with dead CRT's who want to use the machine as a server or such.
(not that it would make financial sense with PPC Mac Mini's being so cheap)
