Things Mac OS 9 doesn't do that you wish it did.

Does Adobe Streamline not do it for you? True that there aren't many options. How about the last generation of Corel/ProCreate draw apps?

Things Mac OS 9 doesn't do that you wish it did.

My MDD and TiBook are last-generation OS 9 machines, and neither of them come close to anything crunchy enough to handle h264. My MDD 1.42 with GeForce Ti 4600 video could barely handle 1fps of x264! It is just too processor intensive, and the amount of data probably choke the bus also. To dial...

6 PowerBook 100's.... but not one works!

Are the 1xx series particularly prone to failure? I see listing after listing on ebay with weird things like: "great shape", "nice condition" - and the descriptions say: "does not boot". I wonder if people rate the 1xx on a different standard, almost as if the expect them not to work. I don't...

    Compatible Systems RiscRouter 3000e

I bought one of these recently for $10. Very nice old router with two ethernet (thick, thin, 10 base T) and two LocalTalk ports. Sounds like it can be used as an AppleTalk-ethernet bridge, among other things. I found some downloads on the Cisco web sites - a quickstart manual and the Compatiview...

    First 475 adventures!

My full 040 finally arrived after a long delay in transit, works great! For regular use I will probably try to implement some sort of cooling for it. I have been busy cabling my room into some sort of network, so this is the first I have touched the 475 in a few weeks. Setup will resume shortly!

AppleTalk and SLIP in 10.6.2 ?!

Poking around a bit more, it appears that there is code, even if this stuff isn't installed: http://www.opensource.apple.com/release/mac-os-x-1062/ Recent Darwin builds do have AppleTalk source, and it has been updated since 10.5.8. Still I would be surprised if I could just compile it and...

AppleTalk and SLIP in 10.6.2 ?!

Borkd. I am finally networking my bedroom/studio! About a year ago I ran a single CAT5 from my basement router through the wall to the second floor and connected it to my Vista/10.6.2 i7 box. It has become my everyday box sort of be default but I like to go online with my various computers, and...

    Network books, SCSI, gaming, Korg

From Amazon I decided to get a stack of books on networking old Macs: Managing AppleShare & Workgroup Severs Designing AppleTalk Network Architectures AppleTalk Network Services (these are all with CDs and written by Network Frontiers: Dorian Cougias, Tom Dell, E.L. Heiberger, and...

Mac os 6.0.7 for powerbook 140/170

Cool project, I didn't even know that one could run 6.0.x on any powerbooks, apart from the "portable".

5xx Blackbird full 040, group buy?

Yes, I have one of those modules. Since I do multimedia antics I need the FPU. Looks like the response in far less enthusiastic then I expected! Unless more people express interest in the next few days the group buy will probably not happen, unfortunately.

5xx Blackbird full 040, group buy?

True, it could make some money and excite may 5xx fans. But I don't have the money to invest in a project like this now. I wish I did, it would be fun. Experience has taught me to avoid other hobbyists helping to fund projects like this due to upset over delayed turnaround, a few ruined chips...

5xx Blackbird full 040, group buy?

Yes, it requires soldering. I am game for anything but BGAs (ball grid arrays). Surface mount does not bother me so much. EDIT: Ah, you just posted about this! No, they appear to be QFP (quad flat package).

5xx Blackbird full 040, group buy?

That's why I proposed a group buy. Instead of $50 each, if we collectively ordered 24 of them we would get them for $25 each.

5xx Blackbird full 040, group buy?

More than I can easily afford now as things are, but I'd say $25 for a new, full 040 is quite good. Even used ones usually go for more, and new are nearly impossible. If you know a cheaper source, by all means please tell us!

5xx Blackbird full 040, group buy?

I have always been amazed that the surface-mount 68040 versions have been so much harder to find for sale that the socketed kind. Well, I just found somebody who has many of them. They are an ebay seller who I am not affiliated with. They offer NOS XC68040FE33M chips in a few different auctions...

    Latest Episode of Failure

Have you tried internal and external SCSI? Also I would check the connectors on your ribbon cables, which can come apart after some time. On my SE the cable was on so tight that I barely notices it starting to separate, and squeezed it back together with some cyanoacrylate. Or indeed try another...

Starting with ][e PDS card, and I'm stuck

Thanks for those helpful links, Applefreak! I have been plugging away all night, but still can't get things working. According to the ][e card panel, my ProDOS partition is D2, S5. So I have tried typing many various versions of: CAT, D2 ,S5 CAT, D2 ,S5, V0 CAT D2,S5 CATALOG, D2, S5 etc...

G5 parts in my SE - noise

It took a while for the SSD to arrive, shipped from China. I just tried the setup. The mini SCSI-IDE bridge works, but not with the SSD. I tried a 2GB PowerBook drive and it worked fine. So it's good to know that the bridges work, since they are harder to find than drives. Why the SSD doesn't...

    MacLab/8 data acquisition - software?

Found it! A few months back I bought two new MacLab 2e units, complete with manuals, cables, and software. But then I was getting ready to set it up and I lost the floppies. Aiiee! Cleaning up I just found them, and contrary to my fears they had not been crushed or corrupted by events here in...
