    How did the PowerPC 603 / 5200 at 75mhz compare to PC:s (486/Pentium)?

I thought the 603 is mostly double-precision? (all registers are double precision, instruction timings are same in double precision, the only advantage with single-precision is that you can use the "multiply & add" and some "fast math" instructions (the compiler is unlikely to be given flags to...

    How did the PowerPC 603 / 5200 at 75mhz compare to PC:s (486/Pentium)?

That's a good source. I do think both entries are with L2 ("w/256K"). The fps diff is likely due to only the vram bandwidth (S3 Trio64+, 64bit and EDO dram) vs the likely 32 bit generic Chips & Tech dram. 5-75...

    Decent video capture for ~$30

The HDMI capture card has usb connection, I connect it to the usb port of any of my win/mac/linux computers, and it behaves like if it was a webcam. On linux I use terminal ffplay or OBS, on Mac/Win I use OBS. This is how it looks like, but it looks better than this when capturing on Windows...

    Decent video capture for ~$30

I'll write down a few notes on what I did to get pretty decent video capture as it wasn't obvious. 1. DB15 -> VGA. This is well documented. 2. active VGA to HDMI adapter. I used "FOINNEX VGA to HDMI Converter Adapter with Audio 1080P" (https://www.amazon.es/dp/B072NCTBVP?) 3. HDMI capture card...

    Performa 5200 repair? (psu broke)

The analogue board might have suffered as well, true. But the PSU is broken for sure. To fix the PSU I think my options are: - repair the original PSU (I've never done such work before) - get a working original PSU with the matching revision (which will eventually fail or need re-cap) - replace...

    Performa 5200 repair? (psu broke)

I did some work to get a 80w micropsu to run a ”portable 5200” (bluescsi and db15 to hdmi capture so the screen is on my laptop). However, I would want my 5200 with CRT to work again. Its original PSU said bzzzzzzt when I plugged it - as if it was shorted. I am thinking best would probably be...

    Debugging via QEMU

Thank you @joevt, I appreciate it. I could not get MacsBug to work in QEMU - I press a key to type something and it just ends up filling the full line with that letter. And apart from that it just seems like one more great tool and convenient to run on my main desktop - although I think you are...

    Debugging via QEMU

Thanks for sharing this, very, very cool(!!) My wish is to set a breakpoint in gdb in CFM and see what happens when I double click an app (New World ROM / PowerPC). I took the ROM of the guest and used tbxi to dump it, and opened ncod_0_CodeFragmentMgr.pef in Ghidra...

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

One odd thing with the video is also that it seems to be offset in x by about 10 pixels (see black area to the left and no rounded corner to the right). For the signal quality, I think it is because the VGA cable is long, alomst 1M, and the DB15 -> VGA is a hack. I will try make a DB15->VGA...

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

OK I fiddled a bit more. I had to connect the monitor id slightly differently so that I would get a multiscan display so I can get all resolutions that the 5200 supports. Even though my DB15->VGA adapter is anyway currently hard-wired for 640x480. Also, I found a mistake on my PCB which helped...

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

Oh nice. Yeah picture is fun :) My plan is to go for plexiglass cover so that when I bring it, I can put my laptop screen on top of it.

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

I had some time again for this, and got some good progress. Now it runs on the micro PSU and I get video out - although the display has some ghosting and slight noise. Also I think I made a mistake with the soft boot so that is not yet working, but I can actually take this with me and have a...

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

Hey! Thanks Chopsticks! Pretty good timing, I'm just now messing around with this again. Not sure about my notes from last time because indeed, all I have to do is connect id0 and id1 (s19 and s20) on the analog board 10p connection, and I get video out(!). However, I still need to connect the...

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

OK a bit of progress. I tried connect the analog board and neck board (to PSU, to the logic board connector, and between themselves), and then I got video on the mirror-out! Turns out, it works even if I don't connect the analog and neck board, and don't connect PSU to them. I only need to plug...

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

Started on this today but ran into some trouble. 8pin connector on 5200 instead of 6pin In contrast to the 630, the cable with power-on from the 5200 logic board connector uses a 10p connector to PSU, but only 8 pins are used. \ If I read this right that corresponds to S1 to S8 on...

    Building a ClearMac from Quadra/Performa 630

    "portable"/"slim" 6200/5200

Thanks so much for all the info in here so far! @Chopsticks and @LaPorta: very cool! I disassembled my other 5200 (it was working fine but its case was completely smashed in delivery, so kept it for parts). I took out the logic board connector (had to disasm *everything* to get to it, would...

    Building a ClearMac from Quadra/Performa 630

Was searching the forums for such projects as I want to turn a smashed performa 5200 into something much smaller. Cool they still love it 👏 are you still happy with the plexiglass? It looks great! 😆
