Yes, it would be a good idea to test other components before jumping to the recap, my bad. Should've mentioned that. Wouldn't be a bad idea though considering the age of the machine.
So uh, I did get my reball jig in but it's simply not fit for actualy using it... so I bought direct heat stencils which will hopefully make this easier. How big of solder balls can you use on the PowerPC chips? My best guess is 0.76mm but I'm not entirely sure.
There could be a possibility that the capacitors are starting to go bad. I used to have a 7300 several years ago and decided to dishwash the board which got it working again, but when I tried to power it on months later the issue came back. Parted out the machine anyway considering it was not in...
I have a 4MB card and tried modding it to 8MB but all I get is a death chime. I know for sure the chips are good, so it's something on the card that needs to be changed seemingly... part number is XMP 54004/163A014781
That did the trick! Unfortunately the system froze right as Geekbench was finishing up and now it starts without a chime and it won't finish loading. Might be a RAM issue or something else but I'm curious as to how far I should push a 1GHz 7455A at 1.6V. 1.3 was stable until that happened, as...
I actually used to have a Ti4600 at one point that I snuck out of the city dump years ago but it failed weeks after I got it because the fan went out and I was unaware of that issue :/
I see... I'll probably try that. I did tin all the pads with fresh solder and clean it up with wick like dosdude1 does in his videos, but perhaps that isn't enough for these.
You should document this! I have a Performa 6360 that had a PSU failure and I didn't really feel like fixing it anymore after I got my 6400. How'd you do everything? What computer did you use as a base?
Just for fun probably... but frankly faster G3s and G4s are my minimum for OS X. Honestly I think it would be interesting to see it run on my PowerMac 6400 though I'm not quite sure if it would work even with the upgrade card. If I'm not mistaken the L2 CPU upgrades work by literally holding the...
I have a 2002 iMac G4 15" (P80) that I pulled off one of my shelves to mess around with because I don't really use it a whole lot. I got curious since I had a couple 7455A CPUs on hand I bought off of eBay about a couple years ago and after years of practicing soldering and hot air work I...
Very nice... if only someone could get Radeon 9600 cards (or any R300 card for that matter) working with full acceleration and driver support in Mac OS 9. Geforce4 Ti 4600 GPUs are a real pain to find. ;_;
It is a sad thing to think about... my trusty dual 1GHz G4 just threw an error at me about the cache failing testing in Mac OS 9. When I boot into OS X it becomes clear that the L3 cache does not show up. Is there anything I can do to fix this or am I screwed?
