    Sfiera’s Conquests

Plus (4 MHz): in a 512k case. Have a SCSI2SD for it, though I’d like to be able to use it just on floppies. Also have a second in parts. TAM (250 MHz): just purchased, and coincidentally arrived on Christmas. Fat back with USB, but missing its keyboard and everything not pictured. Cube (450...

    KanjiTalk on 7.5?

I have a Quadra with both on it (Mac OS 7 and KanjiTalk 7—as far as I know, the Japanese OS was not referred to as Mac OS prior to OS 8). As I recall, I was able to switch between the two by dragging the Finder+System out of and back into the System Folder I wanted to bless, then rebooting. They...

Developing a portable user-land AppleTalk stack

Ah, right, I’m mixing up my terminology. I said “userspace” (non-kernel) but I was thinking “unprivileged” (non-root). Needing root was where I gave up with SheepShaver. Running network infrastructure as root on a Pi sounds totally fine to me, but running a crashy emulator as root on my laptop...

Developing a portable user-land AppleTalk stack

The main reason would be to bridge the physical hardware with emulators. I’m assuming this is difficult or impossible with Mini vMac. I tried and gave up with SheepShaver. If the multicast situation isn’t a dealbreaker, it might even work over Wifi. I assume wireless EtherTalk is impossible, and...

Developing a portable user-land AppleTalk stack

This is neat and I’m interested in trying it out (after Christmas, maybe…). I’m reminded of two other pieces of software that do AppleTalk over IP, both by bbraun: abridge (source), which bridges AppleTalk between two networks with pcap. It seems like this approach might be usable to bridge...

    Booting Mac Plus with scsi2sd...

BalenaEtcher is a substitute for dd. I used to use dd, but I always worried that I’d typo /dev/rdisk0 for /dev/rdisk1 and delete my system. BalenaEtcher only lets you select removable drives. It does complain that the image won’t be bootable, but that’s just because it doesn’t understand the...

    Booting Mac Plus with scsi2sd...

Have you tried initializing the SD card from Windows? What I did is: Download an image from savagetaylor.com. Use balenaEtcher to write the image to the SD card. Make “Device Size” for Device 1 at least as large as the image. Unfortunately, this will only get you a single drive...

    Booting Mac Plus with scsi2sd...

FWIW, my SCSI2SD has been working fine with my v2 ROM ($4D1EEAE1) Plus. I’d be interested! I acquired a second, non-functional Japanese [?] Plus which appears to have an International board, though I’m not quite sure what to make of that, since Japan is a 100V country.

    SCSI2SD Issues

Using one of the SD images from Realitystorm’s blog and providing USB power would have been my suggestions. Even if you would prefer to build your own image or rely on termination power, I’d start with that to help narrow down what the problem might be. I also elected to run off an older 2GB SD...

    SCSI2SD on Macintosh Plus

I recently went through this with a V5.5 and a plus. The three things that tripped me up were: The three settings from the SCSI2SD Mac Plus page (sounds like you have this covered). Getting the image right. Eventually, I used one of the pre-prepared ones from this blog instead of building it...

    AppleTalk net cable

https://photos.app.goo.gl/HecLqe9TL4PecqKW8 In the end, it was easy (as might be expected). Mostly it was a matter of getting an English OS on the Plus so I could navigate it. Haven’t yet tried the LocalTalk Bridge software. I’m still interested in knowing if there’s any way to snoop on the...

    AppleTalk net cable

The newer one is a Quadra on 7.6, so it’s quite networking-friendly. I was able to get Fetch onto it via AFS over EtherTalk (but then switched AppleTalk back to the printer port, since now FTP over TCP/IP can be its link up the technology chain).

    AppleTalk net cable

No, with a printer cable. But I discovered that I didn’t actually have any software on the Plus yet to use the network connection. Maybe it was successful, but I don’t know. Now I have my SCSI2SD, so once I get it booting from there I can try again.

    AppleTalk net cable

I connected the computers. No smoke, no dice. Unfortunately, in my haste to try out networking, I failed to realize that the Plus’s “Apple File Exchange” isn’t related to AppleShare, and I didn’t find any other software to use. Floppy drive’s broken too. I guess I’ll wait until my SCSI2SD...

    AppleTalk net cable

That thread covers my questions pretty well, thanks! I’ll give it a try. I’ve seen this assertion several times. For just two computers, is there an advantage to PhoneNet? It seems like two adapters ($10+ each) and a phone cable is more trouble than a single ($5) cable. (author’s note...

    What’s this C1?

A date code on the capacitor or on the computer? The capacitor appears to say 92/47, but Nov. 1992 would be too late for a stock capacitor in a Mac Plus, wouldn’t it? I’m not sure where to look for a date code or serial number for the computer. Normally, I’d look on the case, but this Plus was...

    AppleTalk net cable

There’s certainly a lot of information on that page, but if the answers to my questions are there, I can’t find them. Mostly, it’s discussing bridging to Ethernet or PhoneNet, which I’m not interested in. I see “The simplest LocalTalk network is simply a serial mini-DIN-8 cable from the printer...

    What’s this C1?

I’ve been reading up about how to care for my new Plus, and one of the things that comes up is the capacitors, particularly C1. So I opened it up and found this surprise: I think it’s probably original, given all the hot glue around it, but it doesn’t match the images I’ve seen online. Is it...

    AppleTalk net cable

P.S. I wasn’t sure if this is the appropriate subforum, but “anything you can hook up to your Mac” would seem to include another Mac!

    AppleTalk net cable

I’m looking to connect two 68k machines via AppleTalk to share files. Since there are just two of them, my understanding is that I can connect their modem or printer ports directly. But, there seem to be two kinds of cables: a crossover “printer” cable and a straight “serial” cable.  There are...
