    You can always use "modern" server drives with the appropriate adapter, being newer they should be more reliable but then even "modern" server drives will be the best part of 20 years old now.... Other option if you just want clicky sounds is i'm pretty sure both BlueSCSI and ZuluSCSI have addons that make clicky noises with a little speaker (Never used them though, just pretty sure I have seen them)

    IIRC there are relay "noisemakers" you can attach to an activity light on an SSD or SCSI2SD type device, which make pretty similar sounds to the r/w head activity.

    For the constant whir I guess just add a quiet fan?

    Surely you can just add a tiny speaker rather than a fan and output white noise? It'd last longer wouldn't it? Even better, fit a BlueSCSI & SSD + speaker and maybe some BlueSCSI plug-in firmware all inside an original 3.5" SCSI HD to emulate one fairly completely!

    I don't think any of the 100-series modems supported voice, no - they have an audio output to the speaker for line monitoring, but no audio input capability.

    From the PowerBook 160/180 developer note. It looks like you can send and receive analog audio on the line if you have an SPI modem. So you can probably use it as a phone

    Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a direct Raspberry Pi Zero GPIO -> Classic Mac serial connection? (UARTs differ between multiple Pi models)

    That isn't a thing, one is UART and the other is RS422. One is TTL, the other is differential pairs.

    At the very least you'd need to make some kind of adapter circuit.

    You don't need to speak differential signalling into the Mac's serial ports. I think you ground RXD+ and the port goes into RS232 mode. So all you need is an RS232 driver and the right wiring. You still need some hardware, but nothing as scary as differential signalling.

    What's a cheap, easy, and super compact way to step down a 5v signal to 3.3v without a logic level converter? I'm not doing serial or any complicated communication protocol, it's just an on/off switch basically. and I only need one-way functionality

    Is there a 68k image manipulation software (other than Photoshop) that has basic support for layers and layer transparency?

    GraphicConverter might although I’m not sure about layers. The current version does but I’m not sure about the old ones.

    There were some Photoshop alternatives back then. CorelPaint I think was around in the 68k days.

    Photoshop was king though - version 3 runs well on 68k machines and was the first version with layers.

    Yeah, this was way before pre-prescription evil-Adobe days. I think Photoshop was actually pretty good back then. I know of Corel PhotoPaint (as already mentioned) but I don't know if that stretches back to the 68K era.

    How do I set my PowerBook 180's external video as the primary monitor? I'd like to get the Apple menu up on the VGA TFT and use it like a desktop

    I used Split & Join to copy over Netscape. It works fine.
    What's that program you use to set a large image as your wallpaper? I use 7.1.1

    there's a few tools you can use. deskpicture was integrated into later macOS I think. Décor is commonly used...

    Congrats! I have one that was in similar shape, including leaves and debris inside, and a rusty backing plate. It's all cleaned up, although the keyboard membrane was also damaged, so many of the keys don't work properly. The membrane doesn't *appear* damaged, but obviously something's not making a connection. :(

    Surely it only shows what it was like if you render it on a period phone, otherwise it is just half modern browser, half old. Pulling up a WAP site wouldn't look like it did on my early 2000s Motorola dumb phone.

    Those have been around for years and work fine. Probably the same listings that have been around for decades. It's unusual to see chargers sold for such old laptops nowadays, but in this case, it's such a standard plug and voltage that it must still be worth it for them.

    Anybody know a PCB prototyping service that'll let you just get 1 or 2 boards made? Not 5?
    If not I guess I'll have to build my own PCB lab

    Five bare PCBs are cheap, but I wanted to have them assembled with SMD components by the PCB company. That's where having five boards sends the price through the roof.

    You're mainly paying for setup costs and time on the pick and place machine and solder oven line on that. Two boards would likely still run about the same.

    At least with JLCPCB, you can order 5 bare PCBs and get them to only populate two.
