New Thermal Paste on the processors in a PM G5 2.0 DP

I have just taken my PM G5 2.0 DP apart to put in a new power supply after the G5 stopped working. The fans wouldn't even turn on. It was not responsive at all.

While I was doing that, I applied new thermal paste to the first of the G5 processors and this seems to have been a mistake. I can get the 4 screws around the processor back in but the 6 long screws on the outside won't go back in.
Does anyone have practical experience with this? Is it simply a mis-alignment of the screws? Are the black plastic holders between the CPU-card and the heatsink too old now?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have found this but it makes no mention of the black plastic stands between the CPU card and the heatsink. It does seem to be doable.
