    To clarify: the lid was BRIEFLY off the hard drive and is back on. The hard drive is fine. I booted from it and used it since then. I knew I would catch hell for the hard drive being open! Anyway, thanks for all the responses and the info. I will swap out all of the capacitors for new ones...

    luckybob, the sound is definitely coming from the speaker, not the hard drive. I opened the hard drive to check if the sound was coming from there. (It is not.) It's closed now :) uniserver, do I need to replace all of the capacitors or a specific one(s)?
