@Callan i am not to bad with soldering and don't mind the CPU pins. But i absolutely struggle with soldering U33 and U46 type chips. What is your go to method for soldering these chips?

My reply was too long, so I messaged @crazyben. For everyone else the short version is lots of flux. U33's plcc's pads are under the chip so I angle the board an inch or two to give me better access to the pads. Small hoof tip. If not enough heat from that a conical.

Thank you for the detailed explanation that is very helpful. I think my problem was the size of the iron tip.
One little 5v short slowed me down, but 2 plcc's removed and replaced... One IIci rebuild up and running! Chuffed!

Hi - getting a Platinum is very near the top of my list. Some kind of trade could definitely be done, did you want an Atari 400? I have a Mac-Con pass-through PDS ethernet card for SE30. Sony VAIOs, PCG21212W (small, cute, white) and PCG-8M1P (Pentium 4, huge). Ans money of course!
FINALLY! Intermittent issues are the worst. It would work for 5, and then simasimac for... however long it wanted to A little electrolytic damage, but cleaned it all and pulled and cleaned all the ic's in the affected areas. What fixed it? Not sure... it was either reflowing the all the vias C7, or it was the nasty video rom socket I replaced. 2 days of AfterDark and counting!
