I've had the monitor running for the past 30 mins or so. Unfortunately, the brightness cannot be turned right down so that the screen is black. That can only be done if I turn the contrast way down. Any ideas?

Yep, it certainly seems to be based on a Starmax 300. The FDD on the Starmax looks like it's a standard PC model with a hard eject button – the New York has a very similar one, except that there is no hard eject. I actually prefer the New York's form to that of the Starmax. Those openings over...

As promised, here's a photo. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a StarMax under a different name, seeing that quite a few clones on that site seem to share similar photos – and the StarMax is one of them.

Update: The New York is now happily running System 8.5, and it actually has a 2.1 GB hard disk (although this is reduced to 1.9 GB, when formatted) and not a 1.2 GB. I also forgot to mention that it has a built-in 100 MB Zip drive, which is nice. This is my third Macintosh SSW-compatible that...

Congrats! Hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine. When I got an LC off Freecycle, I was overjoyed. Only to discover – after having opened it – that a major PRAM battery explosion had occurred, causing irreparable damage to the ROM chips :(

You could also put it in a black 5500 or 5400 case. But, then again, you could always get a TV card for either of those machines and it'd be like a Mac TV, except 8 times faster ;)
