Why 68KMLA is amazing...

Compared to one large rumor site, this place just feels like home, ...
I think I know which site you are referring to. I ditched that place years ago because the people there were way too far up their own butts. Too much snobbery and pulling rank, as well.

Much better people here.

How has everybody been? :D
Thought I recognised your name, from the Snitz forums archive... welcome back! ;)

Things haven't been too bad... users shuffling in and out as they lose and gain interest in the 68k platform. Personally I can't stand using the 68k's anymore, but I don't have the heart to leave this great community. I'll just stay around and contribute what I learned while I did have an interest in them.

So you ruined fritter?
Yea, if anybody here was a fritter critter around here a couple years ago, I created a thread asking about girls, and Tom Owad locked it, because it went sour, but a couple of hours before he deleted it, it really cleaned up. He still deleted it tho. Then Another thread was created, to bash the mods about it, and it turned into an all out war. I PM'ed him to appologize, but...AF has never been the same since. It just went down hill from there. The MLA is different tho, its got a great community feeling!

Sounds like it wasn't all just your thread gobabushka, more like it was that thread that snapped already high tensions. I'll bet a reshuffle of the forums (and maybe a reshuffle of staff) would see that forum running again.

yea, but i doubt tht it would happen, its more of a question and answer forum now then its old roots. kind of sad, tht was my first site tht i was really big posting on

I agree, thats what make the MLA such an open community.

By community you mean a bunch of teens who blabber about stupid things that has nothing to do with what the founding members of the forum cared about, sure.

If 30 grandmas showed up and flooded the offtopic section with talk of knitting that would be their little comunity, how would the rest of you like that?

There is nothing wrong with idle chat, I just think its better to do it on IRC then to use the forum for it (where it gets saved for the rest of time, or untill the next crash).

I would rather see a comunity built around people who have and tinker/use 68k macs then a community where people show up to a 68k forum to talk about teen current events. That is all I was trying to say. There are plenty of places to go for idle chat, and very few for 68K related discussion.

This is an interesting topic...

Well, I do think there is a limit to how far off we should get.

If something in the world is, should or will happen we should be able to talk about it. But yes, most things should be discussed in IRC

I don't think the emphasis should be locking out all off-topic discussion. The fact is when there's excess discussion in the lounge, there's less in the 68k forums, and that could well be due to the current inactivity in the vintage Mac market.

So while blocking off topic discussion except for IRC may work, it has the potential to damage the community.

Finally...

I've seen several times in the IRC channel where users have suggested the channel be ONLY 68k discussions. So forwarding the off topics from here to IRC cause problems there, and the only solution is to move off the 68kMLA altogether just to talk about something else. It's been done before (often with our Car discussions, for example).

You may all resume topic now. :)

In case anyone couldn't tell, I tried veering off-topic for the heck of it, just to see if anyone noticed.

But nonetheless, I think people who come to chat about off-topic stuff all day are OK, as long as they are doing it in threads that aren't about something 68k (or computer) related.

I personally don't even know how to use IRC, and have hardly *ever* been in a chat room, so I don't know how everything works with those, I suppose.

Lol, now you're making me wonder who is still around LC. Does Trash still come here?

Oh, as for off topic banter, I've always believed there should be at least somewhat of a mix. THe MLA did this from the beginning with this forum and from what I see, it has always worked. Without the chance to discuss the bs from normal life at times, it would make a board too sterile. It would become more a place where people check in when they need something and check right back out when done. Here in the lounge, everyone can express themselves much better and we build the friendships that help a community grow. Those bonds that are built are also what prompts us to let the imagination flourish with creativity for all the great projects that you've seen posted in the other parts of this board and the archive that iMac saw me from. ;)
