wow I'm sorry, i'll definitely get on this asap when I get home, but as has been said there currently is unfortunately little I can do ...even ssh is not working. :( I just hope the mac itself hasn't finally kicked the bucket.p

Any updates? I got my PowerBook 150 on the web and have a lack of things to put on it :p .

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on. :( When I get back home for christmas I'll probably run memtest as the RAM may be going bad.

After quite a search through some chat logs I found kdxvcfa.dyndns.ws. Because preterhuman.net was down and I found kdxvcfa.dyndns.ws through preterhuman.net, I thought all hopes were lost, but haha, nope. I found this thread. [:p] ]'>

Is ueberlandowiki.net down, hotline- or KDX-wise? I nmapped it ( [:D] ]'>) only to discover that it had some kind of connection-refusing FTP service open among a few other things that look admin-related (okay, to save anybody curious a scan too, 20, 21, 80, 88 (HTTP thingy, password protected), 113, 548 and 3389 (yes, remote desktop, but again, password protected of course)). If an admin dislikes that I've noted the ports here, feel free to edit this.

I'm looking forward to these servers being back up again. :p :b&w:

Also, can someone provide a description (or a link to one) of what these archives are, how big they are, etc to someone who might have space available but doesn't know where they'd stand legally if they mirrored this? I might have at least one place who might be able to do a batch download if you can convince them that the dreamhost account in question won't go *poof* one day :p

ueberlandowiki.net's vintage software services were permanently closed quite a while ago.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure why it went down again. I'll be home again

next week for christmas break at which point I'll run the AHT

overnight in a loop to see if it catches anything. It's running on a

old Powerbook whose keyboard has already gone and I fear that the rest

of it may now be going too. If AHT catches anything I'll likely need

to ask for that part to be donated (e.g. if it's RAM) or I'll just

need a donated server if it's anything serious (e.g. logic board). I'm

going to try my best to bring everything back up and in a stable state

as soon as possible but currently it isn't looking too promising.

Btw, it's interesting to see how many people use my services since now that it's down there's all sorts of people emailing me asking me what's up. And yet, not a single donation was given to me either by PayPal or credit card and somehow people expect me, a college student, to just pull money out of thin air to fix hardware issues. Depending on what AHT catches I /will/ need donations or the service isn't coming back.

Yeah, I know it's not my ISP because I still get the system update emails and at least last time I wasn't able to access any of the services locally over the LAN either. So I can only assume this is a hardware issue which I plan to confirm next week. I'll keep you guys updated...

I keep telling people, you all gotta donate. If you really want this service to last, donate to the man! He has gotten NOTHING for his troubles.

I'd be extremely happy to donate, but I'm flat out broke, at the moment. :(

You are spot on! I've given out many GBs of bandwidth for absolutely nothing, and now that the server is going south people are expecting me to fix it with the money I just happen to have floating around. The reality is, I've been sharing with people but they haven't been sharing with me. I hardly get any uploads contributed, and even though I clearly have a PayPal donate button on my archive's website which accepts not just PayPal but regular credit cards I've yet to receive any donations of any amount. You have to realize that offering these files for download is expensive, both in terms of bandwidth and in server resources. I've spent hundreds of dollars out of pocket to ensure that there is plenty of space for the archive files, and might have to spend a pretty penny to fix whatever is wrong with the server. The question is, how much do I have to give to this community before people give back?

Nobody asked you to do this.

and I may just stop doing it, we'll see how bad things are with the server and how willing people are to give back. But consider that if I do permanently stop my service, as things are now there aren't many places you can find the files I've been offering...

How can you honestly expect people to donate to a service that is providing illegal pirated materials? Really...

If you don't want to donate, and possibly as a result see one of the few remaining sources for these vintage computing community files disappear then that's fine. Just remember that when you're looking for a utility for your compact mac and you can't find it....

He has a point crew. If he's running this thing, regardless of the contents of it, you're taking whatever you need from his server and offering nothing in return for his efforts. You could argue "nobody asked him to do this", but should it go under there will soon enough be complaints that "there's nowhere to find old Mac resources".

Take your pick.
