WallStreet 14.1/292 for Parts! A Few Questions...

I just snagged a Rev. 1 WallStreet for $50 inc. shipping! It's a parts machine that I will use to upgrade my 13.3/250 model with loose hinges. The seller said that the 14.1" screen has tight hinges and the screen housing is in great shape.

Now for the questions:

1) Do I just swap out the processors? Do I need to change any jumpers, etc.?

2) How do I remove the lower screw covers for the screen without scratching them? They look flush-mounted. :-/

Seems a shame to kill that for parts - it looks a lovely little machine. I'd love something like that - PPC or even colour-screen Mac laptops seem extremely hard to come by. Hopefully you'll put the 250 CPU and loose hinges on that one rather than scrapping it completely, as with an HD and Ram (pretty standard components presumably) you'd have another rather nice laptop, as long as the hinges are strong enough to hold it open.

Do you have the service manual for it, as that may or may not help you out?

Well it wouldn't, if it doesn't have any Ram installed. I was only saying that it would be better to make two working ones out of it, rather than one working one and a pile of bits - it's upsetting to see such a good Mac die :'( I wasn't having a go, I was only saying...anyway, I'll assume you already have the service manual for it.

Yes; and I just realized that I won't need to open the display housing or mess with the screws under the flush-mount cover.

I would like to come out of this with two working PowerBooks, bu I don't have any extra RAM and the only extra HD I have is a 750 MB unit from my 5300

Well hopefully some memory and a standard laptop HD will be findable at some point If you were closer I'd gladly take the almost-complete Wallstreet off your hands ;D Or even swap it for a dead DuoDock }

My advice would be to try and get that one going again and use your 13" one as a parts machine.

if you use that to repair your 233MHz model i will murder you in your sleep.

i would use your 233MHz model to repair that one.

Mine's a 250 Mhz. The 233 can't be upgraded with a 292 (66 vs 83 Mhz bus).

I'll try putting the RAM in it and see what happens.

Anyways, it will be nice to say that my laptop was the fastest in the world when it came out!

Alright, here's what I'm gonna do.

1) Connect the power supply to the new, non-working 14.1/292.

2) Remove the 32 MB RAM card from my current, working 13.3/250.

3) Install this RAM card in the new PB and power it on.

If it boots, in goes the 128 MB RAM card, hard drive, battery, and CD-ROM.

If it doesn't boot, out comes the 32 MB RAM card, processor, and display to be installed in my working 13.3/250.

Good?

Well...he claims it's a Rev. 1 AND a Rev. 2 (?)

Since it's a 292, I suppose it's really a Rev. 1

I actually prefer the Rev. 1's; they have a faster bus speed
