Video of cleaning a 400k disk drive

I didn't find a video how to remove the top of the drive so I thought: let's make one!

Probably not the most professional way to do this but it worked. And it shows at least how to dismantle one.

Have a look at:

Good video. I just did seven of these drives last week and ended up with six working working again. And I have serviced many before. One on this last batch had a bad head position sensor. Another drive is toasted by someone using lithium grease but I stole the sensor from it to fix the other.

For removing the rear c-clip, just put one small screw driver inside one of the two openings between the clip and the pin and pry it. Comes off quick and easy without flying off.

For reviving the mechanicals, I used 3 in one Oil. WD-40 is probably just as great but I never cared for the smell. And the spray,  you don't want that on the head!

Carefull with lubrication. Lubricate well but remove as much as you can when the drive is working mechanically otherwise the floppy will get coated. As viewed sitting in computer, nothing should be lubricated on the left. Only the one pin for the arm that pushes the disk out should be lubricated on top. The right side... it all gets coated. But the worst offender is the arm that looks like a hook facing down. You have to lubricate well behind it without soaking the head position sensor. I think this is the same part you pointed to in the video the twas given you an issue. Use a bad floppy to work the mechanics numerous times, its a lot easier than triggering it all by hand. I often let the drive side right side down on a towel to absorb extra oil before installing the drive for service.

I have a bad floppy drive in my Color Classic.  Can someone point me to a video on taking it apart and cleaning it?

Thanks.
