Using a PPC Mac to prepare drives for 68k Mac

I wasn't sure to put this topic here or to put it in the Compact Mac forum... :-/

I'm having difficult installing System 7.5.3 on my SE/30 equipped with a CF-IDE-SCSI adapter.

I used my Power Macintosh 7200/120 to install System 7.5.3 on the CF card, selecting the option "system software for any Mac", I noted that the system folder is blessed, but it still doesn't boot in my SE/30. :(

So my question is, can a PPC Mac be used to prepare bootable drives for 68k Mac (or more specifically, a SE/30)? :?:

Interesting question, probably more appropriate for the peripherals forum due to its general nature.

Specs:power Macintosh 7200/120 96Mb RAM 1Gb HDD Mac OS 8
What OS was running on your 7200 at the time you formatted the CF card and installed 7.5.3 on it?

What software did you use format the CF?

Does the drive show up on the SE/30 desktop when booted from the original SE/30 HDD?

I've never used 8.x very much, but at some point the HFS -> HFS+ formatting issue reared its ugly head.

For another OS install conundrum for this topic: My QS'02/9.2.2 flat out refused to run the installer for 7.5.3 on a drive headed into a 2300c.

The version of Drive Setup used may be a factor (more specifically the disk driver it installs).

You must format the drive as HFS and not HFS+

Probably the safest way to proceed is to mount a SCSI CD-ROM to the SE/30 directly, and do everything there.

Just for the record, Mac OS 8 is HFS only, only Mac OS 8.1 onwards supports HFS+, I only have Mac OS 8 installed on my Power Macintosh 7200/120, so I don't think formatting is the issue.

I figured that the problem was actually with how System 7.0 interacts with a disk with multiple volumes/partitions on the same physical disk, I tried several times to use control panel to change the startup disk, but to no avail. It always boots up from the first partition, so when I moved the installation onto the first partition, I was able to start up with System 7.5.5 on my SE/30:

Excellent news, congrats! :approve:

Interesting, if you have Systems on the other partitions, will it boot from them as well? :?:

I'm curious if it's a first or nothing or a has to be on first for second to work issue.

Thanks for clarifying the HFS/HFS+ borkage point in the OS hierarchy.
