Trouble using Apple HD SC Setup 7.2.1P on 80MB Apple drive

I have a Performa 475 with a bad original 160MB hard drive. It exhibits the spin up / spin down symptom. From reading the forums, that seems to be a problem with a rubber bumper inside the hard drive case. I will deal with that another day.

(I bought this Performa 475 new way back when. It has been dormant for many years but now I am trying to resurrect it. I started with a recap.)

In the meantime, I can boot from a floppy (System 7.1P4) and from an Zip disk on an external SCSI Zip drive (System 7.5.5).

As an interim solution, I decided to attempt to set up an old 80MB Apple drive (IBM Model WDS-L80) salvaged several years ago from an LCII that had System 7.0.1 installed. After connecting this hard drive to the Performa's internal connector, the Performa would not start up from this drive (System 7.0.1 too old to support the Performa I think). But when started up from the floppy, the 80MB drive appeared on the desktop and I could view its contents so I knew it was still good.

That same start up floppy had Apple HD SC Setup version 7.2.1P. So I used that to attempt to erase and initialize the 80MB Apple drive as preparation to install System 7.1. Apple HD SC Setup 7.2.1P could see the drive. I clicked the Initialize button to start the process. After a half hour or so, the process was still going. I returned much later and then Apple HD SC Setup was showing a message that something had failed. Unfortunately I didn't record that message. An attempt to retry with Apple HD SC Setup 7.2.1P just resulted in the message: "Drive selection failed. Unable to read required information from the disk."

So I tracked down the newer Apple HD SC Setup version 7.3.5 and its patch. Before patching, I used Apple HD SC Setup version 7.3.5 to try to see the 80MB drive but no luck. Could not see it. Then I patched Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5. The patched version could not see the 80MB drive either. Maybe it can see the drive but it is not telling me about the drive. The message displayed whether unpatched or patched: "Drive selection failed. Unable to read required information from the disk."

So then I dug up a copy of FWB Hard Disk Toolkit PE v2.0.5. This program shows the 80MB drive. It shows capacity = 81.69 MB and unallocated = 81.08 MB. And it appears ready to perform a number of tasks on the disk. But I haven't tried any of that yet. Still hoping to resolve this with Apple utilities.

So I am wondering what happened to the 80MB drive when I used Apple HD SC Setup version 7.2.1P.

Or what was the mistake in my plan?

Thanks for any insight.

I don't know much about these things, but it sounds like perhaps there was a bad sector somewhere that botched the initialization, and Apple HD SC Setup doesn't know how to compensate? It could be a sign that the drive is about to fail, or it could be just a fluke. Someone more knowledgible than I will be able to make that determination.
