System 7 Will Not Complete Install

Hi All,

I'm having a strange issue:

In the process of installing 7.1 onto my Macintosh TV (7.5/6 had much too large RAM requirements for the max 8MB on this box), I encountered a strange error.

At the beginning of the installation, I used the "InstallMeFirst" disk.  The install proceeded as normal.  At the end of the installation process, it asked me to plug in the InstallMeFirst disk again.  This time, I received an error that the disk "has the correct name, but is not the correct disk" and the install will not continue.

Am I doing something wrong -- is there a bug -- are there two "InstallMeFirst" disks and did I notice only the one?  What gives?

Please help.

Thanks guys.

Definitely odd, are you using real Apple Install disks or did you make them?

Did they come with the Mac TV or are they universal disks? In order to install 7.1, you need a machine specific disk set. The Mac TV requires System Enabler 404.

Technically, you only need to put that System Enabler on the Install 1 disk. But if that doesn't work out for you, you could always try this.

Sorry, I forgot to mention - I updated the enabler on all install disks to the one intended for the Mac TV. It accepted the first disk to start the install but for some reason will not accept it now. (Remember, I had to boot from this disk to start the install from a formatted drive). If it was an enabler issue I wouldn't get past that point. Right?

Thanks very much for your thoughts. It is very odd and I am at a loss.

I also had problems trying to install 7.1 on my LCIII, even with the Enabler. I had to take some convoluted steps to get it to work. Simply copying Enabler 003 to the 7.1 install disks won't work, since it doesn't know to install the Enabler with the rest of the software. Here's how I got it to work:

1. Copy System Enabler 003 to a System 7.1 Boot Disk System Folder
2. Boot off of the Boot Disk
3. Once in the Finder, copy the Boot Disk System Folder to the internal HD of the LCIII (I formatted the HD before copying)
4. Reboot from the internal HD
5. Run the System Software 7.1 installer disks as normal

That's it! The installer won't delete or overwrite the Enabler, and it will install the full 7.1 Software into the System Folder with the Enabler in it.

Hope this helps :D

Maybe that will work? Of course you should use System Enabler 404 and not 003.

That's the reason!! The install process checks each floppy disk to see if it is unmodified, if it is it rejects the disk (this is why I always keep my installation floppies locked). In your case you added the mac TV enabler to your installation disk, so it isn't anymore as the installer software want it to be ;)

But It isn't really an issue since the rest of the install process has already been done, just copy manually the file in your system folder and everything will be fine ;)

But wait a minute, You can't boot from your HD since the enabler isn't copied in your system folder... So you have to boot from a floppy disk in order to do this copy, but the only boot disk with the enabler on it is the "install me first" one... And this one doesn't allow access to the finder... sad loop lol!

The enabler is quite tiny (about 34kb), so you can add it to the "disk tools" disk, if it doesn't work I'll try to make you a 7.1 boot disk ;)

Thanks for all of the feedback.

Now, here is the weirdness that is happening.  After reading all of the suggestions, I created a System 7.1 "InstallMeFirst" disk that had the original 040 Enabler on it.  (Previously, if you remember, I had modified the disk to have the correct Macintosh TV enabler.)  It had been suggested that the installation process was rejecting the "InstallMeFirst" disk when prompted to insert it for the second time (you plug in to boot to install, then again as the final disk to complete install) because I had modified it with the correct Enabler.

With the original 040 Enabler on the disk, I can't get the computer to start the installation process.  It appears that I need the Macintosh TV enabler on the "InstallMeFirst" disk to start the installation, but for some reason the system is rejecting this same disk on the final step.

This is making me go bonkers.

You make 2 "install me first" disks, one modified with the 404 enabler in order to start your mac and another untouched for the final step of the installation (original unmodified disk)
