Super5300ce™ - 180 MHz ProcSwap-n-Clock Chip Hack

Trash80toHP_Mini

NIGHT STALKER
I've finally decided to use the 180 MHz QFP 603e I managed to source in a 5300ce instead of a 2300c. :approve:

I remember tomlee59 posting some pics of the 5300 MoBo with locations indicated for investigation of the, well hidden and widely separated, Clock Multiplier Resistors. I can't find the post, so if anyone remembers where it was, linkage would be appreciated. I'll hack the bus clock setting as well . . .

. . . it's time for a refresher course on the 603e Docs. :pb:

The 5300ce is a much better portable platform for this ProcSwap due to its higher pixelcount and stock PCMCIA/WiFi capability.

What finally convinced me was the acquisition of a pair of NIB, FOCUS LapisColor MV16 w/EtherNet cards. Between one of those and built in ADB support, I'll have a three connection docking station with a two LCD desktop . . .

. . . not to mention the non-Duo KBD on board! [:D] ]'>

I haven't mentioned my acquisition of a pair of long sought after FDD Bay accessories, the Internal/External VST AC Adapter of my dreams and a somewhat less exciting, but still very nice, VST ZIP Drive. I've got some pictures done, but I'm not ready yet to post them in the peripherals forum.

This plan will also keep my SuperDuo/G3/WiFi hacking dreams alive-n-kicking! }:)

I shall be watching this eagerly. My 5300ce should arrive in a few days.(Payed the wonderful price of 30$ shipped from CA!) If you happen to come across any more of those LapisColorE's let me know. ;)

EDIT- What kind of L2 cache is on the 603e 180 you're swapping in?

That would be a nice unit once completed.

Do you have the MO drive that was made for the 190/5300?

Trash80toHP_Mini

NIGHT STALKER
Nope, neither the MO Drive nor the 3.5" Mini CD Drive has crossed my path, but the ZIP Drive/100 MB ZIP Disk would be my SneakerNet Media of choice.

It's universally compatible from my Plus Upgraded 128k through my new 11.6" AMD Inside 3G NetBook. :approve:

I did hack a full size CD-ROM Drive into a 5300 waaayyyyyy back in the early days of the 68kMLA, but its structural integrity was compromised enough to limit its portability. IIRC, I may never have done the adapter hack necessary for it to actually work, but I wedged that sucker in there all right! It looked like it belonged there . . .

. . . just lost the use of one of the retractible feets! }:)

I may or may not run across that hack again, methinks it may have been in the storage room . . .

. . . when so much of my stuff went bye-bye. :'(

Whatever . . . life & hacking go on!)

This little tidbit is from alk's 5300 FAQ:

2.9.1) Can I upgrade my CPU?
In short, no. The 5300 is not processor upgradeable. However, PowerLogix developed a prototype PDS card CPU "upgrade," similar to the G3 processor cards that can be added to the PowerMac 6100. The card was based around a 130 MHz 603e and was going to carry the PowerBoost name, but it never came to market.
Apparently, there's a PDS in there somewhere? :?: Elsewhere, alk mentions that the external video card slot is a bridged '030 PDS - but shirley that's no good for a CPU upgrade?

I'm pretty sure that the info on the page you're referring to predates the Clock-Chipping/Bus Multiplier Resistor page on Alk's site. ;)

I'm certain he meant that there's no conventional processor upgrade path for the 5300 series. :approve:

Having a comrade who's willing to play with, and has access to, SMT Rework Equipment for this hack . . . [;)] ]'>

. . . and having the 180 MHz version of the 5300ce's native CPU in hand . . . [:D] ]'>

. . . changes that particular limitation significantly. [}:)] ]'>

Muahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All that's really needed for G3 upgrades would be a 603e "Killy Klip" . . .

. . . a/o one of those (mega$) custom QFP -> BGA Adapters w/G3 & L2 on board!

There are a lot of ways to wedge into a PBX bridged '030 bus . . .

. . . High $$$$$ Engineering Man Hours and related development $$$$$ would be the ONLY limiting factors! ::)

I finally unbuttoned the prettier of my two 5300ce-s and got quite a surprise. Not only did it have a couple of screws loose, like yours truly, but most of the screws that belong inside her are missing!

There was a loose 16MB Card rattling around in there too! :approve:

So this little puppy and I are gonna get along just fine!

I've been booting it off Beater 1G, the 1GB Compact Flash Card/Adapter in my troubleshooting kit. It has an OS9 install "for any Macintosh" for testing Beater, my maxed out G3/1400c and now the Wallstreets and Pismos that are cluttering up the joint.

Back to the hack! :approve:

I stuck one of my LapisColor MV-16 ENs in there and installed the software, but apparently, it doesn't like OS9! :p

It works ok, but will only do 800 x 600 @ 16bit and 640 x 480, which I didn't even bother to try. I'll have to put another one in the uglier 5300ce for testing. The HDD's on board w/8.5 on it in Fugly Duckling. The pretty one doesn't even have the HDD cable! I'm sure I can dig another one out.

There's a, brand spankin' new, $10.29 "SD Flash Memory to 2.5" IDE Adapter as Hard Disk" waiting to be plugged into the missing cable and a brand new Kingston 2GB MicroSD Chiplet w/Adapter waiting to be plugged into that . . .

. . . unless I go for the 4GB HP SD Card.

So which OS should I install for the time being . . . :?:

. . . given the meager 32MB RAM/117MHz Proc configuration of ScrewBall . . .

. . . for the moment . . . while I figure some new twists to screw around with her? }:)

p.s. For the nonce, TWO 800 x 600 x 16bit screens are at least twice as nice as just ONE! :approve:

I installed the second LapisColor MV-16-EN in Fugly Duckling and that card doesn't like 8.5.1 any better than 9, which I stuck in and booted from right off. I guess I'll be going with 7.5, which is mentioned in the User's Guide.

The second card only displays about the top half of the pixels under either OS. This is true on a CRT and on an LCD.

The third third card they sent me was the, sans EtherNet, MV-16. I'd ordered three MV-16 ENs that were on clearance, maybe I need to snag a couple more.

Could the faster bus clock of the 5300ce be causing these problems? :?:

I guess it's time to dig out a stock 5300c to test that hypothesis.

Meanwhile, I'll give the third card a whirl! :approve:

I doubt it. My ill-considered opinion is that that sounds like a problem with the VRAM on board the adapter, or the traces leading to and fro.

Hmm... are the buses different? I thought the 117MHz just used a 3.5 CPU multiplier, unless I read that overclocking page wrong. Did the ethernet part of the card work?

I actually haven't looked all that closely at alk's info yet, you are most likely correct.

Dunno about the NIC section yet, I've been in the new place for a little over a year now and I'm not even fully unpacked yet.

Setting up one of my hubs or a server isn't really a high priority for me yet!

I'll definitely give them a whirl though, maybe I'll just hook the two together with a crossover cable! }:)

I'll check the "Bad Card" for cold solder joints, it's been "sealed in box" since the day it passed inspection.

Piccies!)

I've mislaid the nice pics I took of the Focus LapisColor MV & MV ENs . . .

. . . but here is a shot of my Super5300ce™ thus far . . .

. . . with a temporary 3 LCD Setup!

You can see the full pixel output on the pic above . . .

. . . and the 3/4 screen intermittent pixel output bug in the pic below! :disapprove:

I'll get it ironed out . . . eventually! :-/

I should take a shot of the VST ZIP 100 to stick in here too, but it's quite a bit more common . . .

. . . a shot of the IIsi friendly 15" KDS Radius LCD I recently got up & running . . .

. . . and the SuperMac SuperView driving it off the SCSI Port!

This one came in on Saturday, so I took a bunch of pics to update my hack threads . . .

. . . and maybe for a conquest post or three!)

Have you had any problems with your 5300s locking up when using an external monitor with the MV16-EN?

I've had an MV16-EN in my 5300 for ages, and it'll drive an external monitor (and network) just fine until an audio event (error message, media file, et cetera) occurs, at which point the entire system locks up.

They did buy Radius, but their hardware mostly consisted of generic LCD monitors. Mind you, I used to own a 15" KDS RAD5 LCD and was in awe of it when it was first put on my desk.

I haven't actually done much with them as yet, but no problems have cropped up at all in the little time I've had to play with them.

Lockups on 5300s never required any fancy add-ons in my experience. Have you tried to duplicate your results, without the MV16-EN on board. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could, what with the 5300 being the very first PPC implementation in a PB and all.
