So what's new with your Newton?

Having acquired a MessagePad 130 earlier this year, the newness has worn off but I still find myself unusually compelled to continue using it. Generally late at night will find myself wanting to jot down mental notes or otherwise and continue to feel like it's a good place to write it all down so it's always in one spot. Though I should probably start backing it up now that I'm using it regularly.

Decided against the 2000/2100 (for now) but may be flip flopping on that decision. I'm not sure if the slightly bigger screen size will make it more usable or just more of a weighted brick where I end up finding myself wanting to revert back to the 130 since it's so... small for what it is and the time period it was released.

Lately we've been planning a trip to Tennessee and I've jotted some other notes down to work out. There's certainly something nice about writing on it and it does a much better job than I would have ever imagined....

Even found myself drawing/doodling on it, which I would like to do more of as time permits. Work has been overwhelming lately but here I am.

It took forever to figure a way to import the pictures on my PowerBook 1400 but after weeks of tracking down the software and importing, I was able to color in some of the goofy drawings I had worked on using Photoshop 5.5 on the 1400 and then printed it on a StyleWriter 2200. Still haven't completely finished it but someday it'll happen.

What has everyone else been doing or using their Newton for lately?

Just been getting mine up and going again complete with all the appendages - will have to get the portable printer out too like you have - to complete the set…
I was also going to try and install this new software “FilePad” that I found on a disk I got with a purchase. Unfortunately the disk is not working and it seems it’s not available on the usual file repositories… From googling it seems it might have come as part of some installs in some countries, but could not find anything on 68kmla or elsewhere.
Anyone any ideas where I can get a replacement disk image?

I like your doodles!

I use my eMate as an emergency out of band serial terminal for if I muck up network configurations. It's much more fun than all the other options.

I've only recently joined the Newton club: I have the first-gen H1000 MessagePad (needed recapping) and I got an eMate only couple weeks ago (sold without PSU as not-tested but worked fine, did the preventive fix for the hinges and replaced the battery).

I also enjoy just doodling down notes with the pen! I also love the concept of "beaming" (especially the fact that they call it that!) stuff between devices. I've seriously though of taking the MessagePad with me into meetings and seeing if anyone notices...

So far I've enjoyed the simpler UI of the MessagePad, the eMate seems somewhat complex at first but the keyboard is nice.

@cheesestraws: I really need to get myself the cable to do that, the eMate would be a great quick-grab terminal. What are you using as a terminal program on the eMate?

FilePad 1.5/6 is on unna.org. Nice little database manager for NewtOS.

Go for it. I took notes on my Newton at a conference in Tokyo University a few years ago. It was a great ice-breaker to start up conversations.

I am fiddling with 3d printing the battery case for a 2000, and in need of checking the backlight elements.
Just got an eMate which still need to be tested. My wildest dream would be to find a way to localize all Newton system software which as now only exists in English, German and maybe French... but no idea where to start from :)
