Rescuing ink and finding gold

It's been a pretty good couple of days for Apple finds for me. On Friday, I rescued a small treasure trove of original Stylewriter printer inks that were headed out to the dumpster. A few of them will fit in my SW2400, but most of them were for the SW1500 (and equivalent models, don't recall all the exact models offhand). Some were even still shrink-wrapped in bundles of 6. A couple of the loose ones had the dates '96-'97 written on them, so they must have been kicking around the supply closet for god knows how long. All the individual boxes seemed to be still completely sealed on the outside, though I haven't had a chance to fully inventory the whole thing just yet. Who knows if any of them will actually still work after so long, but... just won't know until somebody tries them.

Turns out Saturday would be even better. I found someone selling an old Powerbook, and was asking entirely too much considering what the specs listed on the underside had said. Powerbook G3 series: 14.1 inch screen, 233mhz, 32mb RAM, 2gig HD, 4MB video. Not to mention that it had obviously had its share of traveling, considering all the scuffs and scratches that marred its surface. Didn't seem at all worth the $80 price tag she was asking. It was a bit hard to tell if it was working because of how bright and sunny it was outside, so the price came down to $60... still a bit too pricy for me, but I was still curious. Who knows what bonuses could be lurking inside. Once it finally started up, it was so bright outside that I could hardly see the screen, but I knew enough to go right to the Apple menu get the scoop from About this Mac. I literally could not believe what it said (even considering the bright sun): 500mhz G4 with 512MB of RAM!!! I was honestly surprised when she then confessed that she really didn't want to have to take it back home. To which I asked if she would take $40 for it. That worked, snagged a sweet deal if ever I saw one. Once it was home, I got to see exactly how much better it would get, but I'll save that for a separate topic.

Very nice conquest there. G4 500 and 512m ram. That's VERY usable.

Let us know about the ink when you try it out.. I Still have a 1500 and 2400 sitting nearly new in boxes in the basement. I wonder how long the sealed ink actually lasts? I do know that that I still have old HP Inks for a Deskjet 500 with 95 date codes that work in them. So maybe the same holds true for the "separate" inks tanks too?

A Wallstreet with a G4 upgrade and maxed RAM? Nice score, and yeh, it takes a while for that much RAM to run POST. :)

I opened four boxed and sealed 2400 cartridges the other day and I couldn't get any of them to print. I've had better luck with the 1500 cartridges though. Congratulations on the G4 card. You won't find that one at $40 again.
